Netiquette Core Principles - From An Ethical Perspective - Via Netiquette IQ

Composing Online: Social Is Sexy but Email Still Rules in the Workplace
Why Students Need Practice in Composing Professional Emails
"Our students don't use email," a colleague remarked recently. And for the most part, she's right.
According to a Pew Research report, the primary mode of electronic communication among teens is texting. Two-thirds of American teenagers say they rely on text messaging to stay in touch with friends. In contrast, "More than half (54%) of all teens now say they never use email."
So does that mean email is going the way of the dodo and the personal letter?
Not just yet--and especially not in the workplace, where email is still the most common form of written communication. Jeff Sonderman of the Poynter Institute notes that email "remains the standard for private, direct exchanges between small groups of adults." This is true despite the rapid rise of social media and company messaging systems.
This is also true despite the shift from PCs to tablets and smartphones. For professional workers, the most popular activity on handheld devices is sending and receiving emails--and not just between colleagues. Consider these examples of the continuing importance of email in sales, marketing, and political fund-raising.
Sales
Although social media is ideal for promotion and building awareness, it does not always work well to get customers to act. For many digital businesses like ours, email remains the most powerful tool to close the sale and gain paying customers.
(Jeff Cornwall, "Why Email Marketing Is More Effective Than Social Media." Forbes, October 24, 2015)
 Politicking
While the [political] campaigns are using newer social media to drive home their message, old-fashioned email addresses are still crucial to fundraising.
"Nothing comes close," to an email list, said Michael Beach, co-founder of Targeted Victory, a digital campaign firm that works with Republicans. . . .

"There was a lot of investment in email marketing in 2012; there's going to be even more in 2016," said Fluent's Chief Marketing Officer Jordan Cohen.
(James Doubek, "Political Campaigns Go Social, but Email Is Still King." NPR, July 28, 2015)
 Marketing
Yes folks, social may be sexy, but email delivers—in terms of both customer acquisition and retention. . . .

“Email marketing is a proven tactic for small business and one that continues to be heavily used despite the rise of numerous other channels,” said Greg Sterling, vice president of strategy and insights at Local Search Association.

(Heather Clancy, "Email Marketing Is Alive and Well, at Least for Now." Fortune, June The Killer App
Email was the original killer app, and I think it still is. . . . Email is personal, it doesn’t stream by and disappear, it’s universal, and it works. The inbox is really the perfect place for your daily dose of news. And newsletters are hot again. Scientists say that the last surviving creatures on Earth will be microbes. I predict that the last living microbe will die just after sending an email.
(Editor Dave Pell, interviewed by Kavi Guppta in "Dave Pell of NextDraft: Email Is Still a Killer App, and Newsletters Are Hot Again." Forbes, December 15, 2014)

What all this means for today's students is that before entering the business world they need to learn how to compose effective emails--messages that are clear, concise, considerate, and correct. British educators Sue Jackson and Penny Jane Burke make the point that students require practice in presenting their ideas in forms other than conventional essays.
Emails have their own conventions; often they are seen as informal, yet there is a certain social etiquette about ways of writing an email in professional contexts. The email written in the work context is usually structured, organised around key points, polite and considerate and written for a specific purpose, with a key theme identified in the subject heading. Furthermore, emails often appear on the surface to be intimate and private communications, but can be forwarded to others and used as a legal document.

Tabula Rosa Systems Technical Term For 11/16/15 - Yik Yak

From whatis.techtarget.com
Yik Yak
Yik Yak is a microblogging app that allows people to post messages (yaks) without user names; the mobile app aggregates and presents the posts of users within a 1.5 mile radius as a streaming data feed.
Users can reply to messages anonymously and vote posts and replies up or down. The app combines instant messaging and GPS technologies to enable posting within the specified geographical area. Geofencing be used to block Yik Yak within specified areas.
Yik Yak features include:
·         Yakarma: A numerical score based on upvotes and downvotes received and given.
·         Upvote/Downvote: User votes to raise or lower the score of a yak. The higher the score, the more it affects Yakarma. Yaks that reach a score of -5, on the other hand, are automatically deleted.
·         Peek: Enables view-only access to Yik Yak community feeds from other areas, such as college or university feeds.
·         New/Hot Tabs: The option to switch between a chronological feed and a feed of the most popular yaks, based on upvotes.
·         Other Top Yaks: The current Google image result page from searches for the word "yak". Typically all images of the animal.
·         My Herd: Allows users to designate an area such as their home, workplace or campus as their base camp and post to it even when they are not in range.
·         Photos: Allows users to include images in yaks. Photos are moderated for unacceptable content and displayed in grids of locally-posted images.
After Yik Yak launched in 2013, it was criticized for providing an anonymous channel forcyberbullying. Multiple high-profile incidents led the developers to block the app near high schools and middle schools the following year.
Although Yik Yak enables anonymous posting, that doesn't mean that messages can't be traced back to their sources. Users are required to provide a phone number for sign up and Yik Yak stipulates that they can provide police with user IP addresses, GPS coordinates, device details and data and time for each message if supported by a search warrant, court order or subpoena. As a result, Yik Yak users have been arrested for making threats of violence in their posts.
According to some security and privacy experts, what Yik Yak offers is really pseudoanonymity -- the appearance of anonymity, but not the reality.

Netiquette IQ Blog Of 11/16/2015 - 'Anonymous' Hackers Declare War on ISIS - Let's See If They Can Gather Intelligence!

'Anonymous' Hackers Declare War on ISIS in Video Message
by Holly Ellyatt, CNBC
The hacker group Anonymous has apparently responded to the attacks on Paris by posting a video declaration of war against ISIS.
In the as-yet-unverified video, posted on YouTube, a spokesperson wearing the group's signature Guy Fawkes mask said the group of hackers would use its expertise to wage "war" on the militant group.
"Expect massive cyber attacks. War is declared. Get prepared," the announcer says in French.
"Anonymous from all over the world will hunt you down. You should know that we will find you and we will not let you go. We will launch the biggest operation ever against you," the spokesperson continued, according to translated transcripts of the video.
ISIS operates in parts of Syria and Iraq in its mission to establish a caliphate, but has recently orchestrated more attacks abroad, the latest being Friday's attack on various bars, restaurants and a concert hall venue in Paris.

A manhunt has begun in Europe to find those that helped the attackers, most of whom wore suicide belts. France retaliated at the weekend by launching more airstrikes against ISIS positions in Syria.
In Anonymous' latest video, the masked spokesperson says in French that "the French people are stronger than you and will come out of this atrocity even stronger," although the video was not on the group's official channel.
However, a tweet from the group's official Twitter account on Sunday said the group was at war with Daesh, — another name for ISIS.
The hacker group rose to prominence after a series of cyber attacks against individuals, governments and organizations that it does not approve of, including PayPal, Mastercard and the Church of Scientology, among numerous others.
