Netiquette Foundation Skills - Via Netiquette IQ 11/21/15

NETIQUETTE AS THE FOUNDATION OF 21ST CENTURY SKILLS.

Netiquette as the foundation of 21st Century Skills.
“21st Century Learning” is here to stay and many Teachers and schools are doing amazing efforts to incorporate the framework of the future into their curriculums, standards and everyday classes. One of the most important skills to begin with is Netiquette. Today Netiquette or Cyber etiquette is as important as on-ground etiquette, but many schools and parents are not teaching kids this new 21st century skill, even though, in my opinion, it is the building block for all the others.
What is 21st century learning you may ask? Helen Soule, Executive Director of Partnership for the 21st Century Learning (2015) talks about how learning in the 21stCentury shouldn’t be limited to classroom walls, and as such should focus on “all the myriad learning experiences a child has throughout life that prepare him or her for the real world” this modern learning framework enfolds the certain skills that are needed for 21st century life.
1.    Information, Media and Technology: In a world packed with rapid changing mountains of information the 21st century citizen should effectively create, evaluate and utilize information, media and technology.
2.    Life and Career Skills: today’s life requires so much more global and competitive skills such as Social & Cross-Cultural, Productivity & Accountability and Leadership & Responsibility.
3.    Learning and Innovation Skills: these are the Skills that separate the readiness of the students to confront real life and focus on Critical thinking, Communication, Collaboration, Creativity
The following Video created by EF Explore America (2012) perfectly sums up what 21stcentury learning framework should be like:
So, what is Netiquette and where does it fit?
Netiquette is described my many authors through out the web but as Virginia Shae (2004) puts it: Netiquette or Cyber etiquette is the forms required by good breeding or prescribed by authority to be required in social or official life.” in this case in the cyber world. On-ground etiquette is a set of rules enforced by a culture or society with the purpose of protecting the individual of offences that are not punished by law, but are punished by society; the same can be said about Netiquette. For example, Law does not pursuit a person for not saying thank you or chewing with their mouth open or for speaking rudely at other people, but society does, and it shows its punishment by excluding said person from a social group. The same happens in the Cyber world, a “Troll” or “hater” will be blocked and flagged across different platforms.
Both on-ground and digital etiquette are basic for a peaceful interaction. It is imperative that people have a common knowledge, or shared parameters on how to behave, making it easier to come to understanding and facilitating prompt communication. Netiquette is extremely significant because there is no “indirect communication” or additional information such as body language or voice tone to add meaning to something said, so a Sarcastic comment or to-the-point message can be taken out of context.
One of the current main problems with teaching digital etiquette is the learning generation gap; etiquette or manners are traditionally taught at home, where parent are constantly watching and teaching kids how to behave properly in society, making etiquette a 24/7 learning environment, the problem with Netiquette is that parents are learning alongside kids this new skill, and in many cases, being left behind and being taught by their children, meaning that there is no constant teaching at home or a complete immersion in the learning of this new skill. “Millennials” are one of the first generations to completely turn around the power balance in a family, being the ones teaching their parents how act and preform instead of the other way around. If we want to start teaching kids to be global and cross-cultural leaders we are obliged to make sure that they are fully equipped to make the most of they interactions.
The importance of Teaching Netiquette as the first 21st Century Skills comes from the strong emphasis of communication and collaboration in the 21st century learning framework. “Internet users come from many cultures and walks of life. They arrive with a mix of expeculations using a variety of technologies, which they access in different ways” (Preece, 2004) and having a common set of ground rules for peaceful interaction is the first step to rewarding teamwork and communication.
For this 21st century skills to work, there has be a common social norm that mediates the interactions and partnerships between students learners of all ages, moreover between all Digital Citizens. This is basically the job of Netiquette, with out the basic knowledge of Netiquette the communication, collaboration and Digital Leadership, can be threaten, and for the 21st Century Framework to work, Netiquette should be the foundation upon which everything else is built, being the first step for diplomatic cyber citizenship.

Netiquette IQ Technical Term Of The Day - Internet of Everything (IoE)

Internet of Everything (IoE) from whatis.com

Part of the Internet of Things glossary:
The Internet of Everything (IoE) is a concept that extends the Internet of Things (IoT) emphasis on  machine-to-machine (M2M) communications to describe a more complex system that also encompasses people and processes.
The concept of the Internet of Everything originated at Cisco, who defines IoE as "the intelligent connection of people, process, data and things." Because in the Internet of Things, all communications are between machines, IoT and M2M are sometimes considered synonymous. The more expansive IoE concept includes, besides M2M communications, machine-to-people (M2P) and technology-assisted people-to-people (P2P) interactions.
The Internet of Things, in its broadest conceptualization, includes any type of physical or virtual object or entity that can be made addressable and given the ability to transmit data without human-to-machine input – those are the things in the IoT. Things are often items that would not have been networked in the past; automation of thing communications is also central to the IoT concept. The IoE, on the other hand, also includes user-generated communications and interactions associated with the global entirety of networked devices.

Tabula Rosa Systems - GMAIL IMPROVING SECURITY FEATURES FOR EMAIL USERS

 ·        GMAIL IMPROVING SECURITY FEATURES FOR EMAIL USERS WITH ADVANCED WARNING ABOUT UNENCRYPTED COMMUNICATION

Submitted by Rachel Walters on Mon, 11/16/2015 - 02:26 from nycity.com

Google’s free email service Gmail is planning to introduce some interesting security features and will inform email users in case the email communication is not encrypted. Google’s Email service informed on its official blog that within three months, the changes will be rolled out for most of the Gmail users. The new features will warn users in case they receive an email from non-gmail users and those messages aren’t encrypted.
After NSA’s snooping incidents came to light, encrypted email and communications via other applications have been in demand. The emails sent through Gmail are already encrypted and people using Gmail as their email provider will not see any change.
As per the data provided by Google, Gmail users currently receive nearly 61 percent of their emails from non-gmail users as encrypted. The information regarding new security features was shared by Elie Bursztein, Anti-Fraud and Abuse Research and Nicolas Lidzborski, Gmail Security Engineering Lead.
Gmail engineers have closely worked with the University of Michigan, and the University of Illinois researchers to improve security features on Google’s email service. Google currently provides free email accounts with 15GB space. Gmail already offers strong security settings for users. Gmail also offers a very effective spam filter which has reduced the trouble of deleting unwanted and promotional emails.
Google said, “We’re constantly working to help make email more secure for everyone. These efforts are reflected in security protections like default HTTPS in Gmail as well as our Safer Email Transparency report, which includes information about email security beyond just Gmail.”
Google's Security blog said....
Our study identified several new security challenges as well.
First, we found regions of the Internet actively preventing message encryption by tampering with requests to initiate SSL connections. To mitigate this attack, we are working closely with partners through the industry association M3AAWG to strengthen “opportunistic TLS” using technologies that we pioneered with Chrome to protect websites against interception.
Second, we uncovered malicious DNS servers publishing bogus routing information to email servers looking for Gmail. These nefarious servers are like telephone directories that intentionally list misleading phone numbers for a given name.

Tabula Rosa Systems = Email Stress

 ·         Email Overload Stressing Out Consumers

·          www.mediapost.com  by Jess Nelson, November 13, 2015, 3:22
The fear of Friday the 13th is called "paraskevidekatriaphobia." Luckily for email marketers, there is no scientific term for email phobia -- not yet, anyway. Emails are a daily stress-inducer for most consumers, but limiting the frequency of checking email throughout the day reduces psychological stress and increases greater well-being, according to a 2014 research report by the University of British Columbia.
Employees who receive after-work emails and phone calls are also more likely to suffer from negative health effects that include insomnia, anxiety, headaches, fatigue, and digestive issues, according to a recent study conducted by the German Society for Labour, Industrial and Organizational Psychological Research study. And a 2012 study by the University of California at Irvine found that people who do not check their emails for an entire work week see positive health benefits that include more natural heart rates.
Gabel, an Italian textile company, revealed to the BBC that it would ban company emails this week to help reduce stress. Should email marketers be concerned about email's correlation to stress, and what can they do to mitigate its effects?
ADVERTISING
Although most studies point to internal company communications as the main stress-inducer, frequency is an important factor. “Email overload is real,” agrees Victor Amin, data scientist at SendGrid. “Consumers can’t always keep up with the bombardment of email marketing messages in their inbox. Marketers need to be careful not to fatigue their recipients.”
“You should send multiple emails per day only rarely, and only to recipients who consistently engage with your mail,” Amin says. “For those on your list with low engagement, send less frequently. And, of course, those recipients with no engagement shouldn’t be sent to at all.”
Technology market research firm The Radicati Group estimates that 205 billion daily emails were sent in 2015, and that email frequency will grow by 3% annually to surpass 246 billion daily emails by 2019. Increasing email volume means that email marketers are facing more competition when trying to capture a consumer’s attention through their inbox, but email marketers can decrease their spam rates by segmenting email lists by engagement rate.
Vivek Sharma, CEO of Movable Ink, recommends that companies look to personalization solutions to reduce email stress. “While taking a break from email all together could be a good experiment to reduce stress in the workplace, we encourage employees and marketers to follow this advice: strive for fewer, but more highly targeted and relevant emails, to colleagues and customers alike,” Sharma says.
A recent study by MarketingSherpa reveals that consumers want to choose the frequency with which they receive email promotions and updates, which may open the door to another strategy for mitigating email stress.

Tabula Rosa Systems Technical Term - Telehealth - A View To Future Health Care

 Telehealth

Telehealth is the transmission of health-related services or information over the telecommunications infrastructure. As such, telehealth covers both telemedicine, which includes remote patient monitoring, and nonclinical elements of the healthcare system, such as education.
Telehealth examinations can be performed by physicians, nurses or other healthcare professionals over a videoconference connection to answer a patient's specific question about their condition. A telehealth visit can also be a remote substitute for a regular physician exam or as a follow-up visit to a previous care episode. Convenience, for both sides of the care equation, is one of the major benefits of telehealth. Patients can communicate with physicians from their homes, or the patient can travel to a nearby public telehealth kiosk where a physician can conduct a thorough inspection of the patient's wellbeing.
Differences in state telemedicine licensure laws complicate the practice of telehealth. Most U.S. states do not allow physical exams to be done remotely.  Also, many states require physicians to have full medical licenses to be able to practice telemedicine within that state, while other states mandate physicians have special telemedicine licenses. The American Medical Association is one of the major healthcare groups that called for standards to be applied to telehealth to give patients more access to remote care services.
Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement for telehealth services, such as remote checkups, is another issue that has slowly been catching up to the level of in-person healthcare. The majority of states provide some amount of financial reimbursement to providers who perform telehealth visits, though not all of them offer reimbursements equal to those given for conventional medical appointments.
The American Telemedicine Association, established in 1993, promotes the delivery of care through remote means and hosts a yearly conference on the latest news and developments in telehealth. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) also supports the development of telehealth. A bill introduced in Congress in 2015 would allow qualified VA health professionals to treat U.S. veterans without requiring the patient and physician to be in the same state.

Tabula Rosa Systems - Blog Of 11/18/15 - Google Study Finds Email Security A Mixed Bag

From darkreading.com

Google Study Finds Email Security A Mixed Bag
The use of encryption and authentication mechanisms by Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft has improved security -- but problems remain.

Google will soon start warning Gmail users of potential security risks when they receive an email from a non-encrypted connection. The warnings are scheduled to roll out in the next few months and are designed to push industry-wide adoption of strong encryption and authentication technologies for email.
Google’s move stems from a multi-year study conducted by researchers at Google, the University of Michigan, and the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, that surfaced mixed news on the email security front.
The researchers examined Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) server configurations on the Alexa list of top million domains as well as one year’s worth of SMTP data from emails sent and received via Gmail.
SPONSOR VIDEO, MOUSEOVER FOR SOUND
The study showed that email security overall has improved significantly over the past two years mostly because of the broad adoption of encryption and authentication standards by Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft, the three biggest providers of email services.
However, a vast majority of the SMTP servers that other organizations use for sending and relaying email lag significantly behind in the use of Transport Layer Security (TLS) and other security mechanisms for protecting email, thereby exposing users to security risks.
The researchers found that incoming messages at Gmail that were protected by TLS jumped from 33% to 61% between December 2013 and October 2015. Similarly, the proportion of TLS-encrypted messages sent from Gmail to non-Gmail addresses increased from 60% to 80% in the same period, showing that a lot more domains support encrypted email compared to two year ago.
But when the researchers examined SMTP server configurations belonging to domains in the Alexa list of top million websites, they found a different story. Only 82% on the list, for instance, support TLS, and just 35% are configured to allow server authentication, the researchers noted. The relatively low adoption is likely because two of the top three SMTP platforms don’t support TLS by default, they added.
A similar gap in security capabilities exists with regard to email sender authentication. For instance, while Google uses a combination of mechanisms like DomainKeys Identified Mail (DKIM) and Sender Policy Framework (SPF) to validate inbound messages, only 47% of those in the Alexa list had a similar capability. A bare 1% use Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting & Conformance (DMARC) for authenticating senders.
The security patchwork offers attackers an opportunity to intercept and snoop on email and do other kinds of damage, the report noted
In a blog post Friday, Elie Bursztein, a member of Google’s anti-fraud and abuse team, and Nicolas Lidzborski, security engineering lead for Gmail, noted a couple of the challenges created by the inconsistent application of email security standards across the industry.
“First, we found regions of the Internet actively preventing message encryption by tampering with requests to initiate SSL connections,” the two Googlers said. Google is currently working with members of the Messaging Malware Mobile Anti-Abuse Working Group (M3AAWG) to strengthen what the two researchers described as ”opportunistic TLS” to mitigate the threat.
“Second, we uncovered malicious DNS servers publishing bogus routing information to email servers looking for Gmail. These nefarious servers are like telephone directories that intentionally list misleading phone numbers for a given name,” the two researchers said.  Google’s goal in warning Gmail users about unencrypted connections is to alert them to such dangers, they said.
