Tabula Rosa Systems Blog Of 11/28/2015 How Mobile Apps Are Transforming The Job Search

Yarden Tadmor from techcrunch.com

Searching for a job is just like dating, banking or procrastinating on chores until someone else does them: It’s something we all have to do. So why shouldn’t the job search be the basis for mobile apps, like those other adult obligations? Over the past couple of years, it has.
As 2015 turns to 2016, the job search is now squarely the business of mobile technology, with the tedium of resumes, interviews and salary negotiations streamlined to help nervous job seekers breathe a sigh of relief.
Though it goes down differently for everybody, the job search can generally be split into four major categories: professional networking, job discovery, job applications and the employer communication and interview stage. Whether targeting one or more of these phases, mobile apps have emerged to streamline and simplify the entire job search, allowing an increasingly smartphone-dominated society to network, search, apply and communicate on their time and on their terms.
Simplifying The Social Web
For the better part of a decade, building a professional network has been squarely the realm of LinkedIn. While job fairs, meetups and industry-specific marketplaces like Stack Overflow and Mediabistro have successfully siphoned off some of that connectivity, LinkedIn’s presence still loomed large. Now, though, startups are beginning to build an audience of users who are choosing a different path to better protect their information and take control of their networks.
Caliber describes itself as a search engine for business contacts. The app sits on top of your social and professional networks (read: LinkedIn) and lets you search for and chat with connections based on their professional background.
As opposed to other networking apps that help you build, maintain and monitor a network, Caliber empowers users to maximize them through sleek, non-invasive and direct communication. Caliber CEO Andres Blank said the app has more than 4 million searchable profiles, including 1 million in New York City and San Francisco. The app facilitates communication at a rate of 23 percent, meaning one in five requests is accepted.
We are living in a world dominated by speed and efficiency, so why should we expect our job seekers and hiring managers to be any different?
Weave employs a Tinder-esque interface and a matching algorithm to allow users to swipe through potential professional contacts in their area. Founder Brian Ma said Weave provided a more discrete, convenient approach to networking than events or blind reach-outs, which can be a hassle even when done among friends. Ma said that, on average, users connect with someone within three days and meet within a week.
Reach takes things a step further, allowing networkers to find professionals by proximity, recently visited places or interests, in real time. Intro, an about.me service, allows users to generate digital business cards from their about.me profiles, select what information they want to share and share it with others.

Tabula Rosa Systems Blog For 11/28/15 - Netiquette Rules - Creativity—The Potential Differentiator

The following is an excerpt from my new book, "You're Hired! . . . "

Netiquette Creativity—The Potential Differentiator

“You never get a second chance to make a first impression.”
—Will Rogers

Are business Netiquette and creativity mutually exclusive? Are they partners by necessity? Can they be combined to offer a stronger, more effective means of successful communication for the job seeker—one that results in more interviews and a new job?

The answer to these questions is that email Netiquette and creativity are not only complementary, but when combined, they offer a stronger and more effective vehicle for achieving your employment objectives. When any recipient receives an email, we all know that an appropriate personalization adds a layer that invites acceptance. In the following salutations, only the last inspires the recipient to read more:

        Dear Dale Carnegie (wrong)

        Dear Carnegie (very wrong)

        Dear Mr. Carnegie (correct)

The Need to Capture Attention

Today’s job market is crowded, shifting demographically, and, because of growing technology, inundated with résumés. It is not uncommon for an employer to receive hundreds of emails or résumés for a single job opening. It is no longer enough to have a thoughtful, well-designed, and content-rich cover letter or résumé. There is often a desire for job seekers to add embellishments and enhancements to their emails to capture the attention of recruiters or hiring managers and inspire them to go beyond the three-to-eight-second interval they usually spend on emails. It really isn’t a strict set of rules for using creativity on your job search emails; it is more a question of when, where, and to whom it is appropriate to do this.

In order to increase the opens, reads, and sustained attention of the recipient, there are many items you can introduce into your email to distinguish it from others. This, together with a strong Netiquette foundation, will bring you to the level of a Netiquette IQ one-percenter. In achieving this, you will most assuredly accomplish your asserted goal of having your résumé opened and read.

Many job applicants use their computer’s default fonts for their email as well as the default font with which to print their résumé or CV. To provide a maximum effect that covers both of these areas, utilize a single font, size, and attribute (e.g., intensity, color, and so forth) for consistency. It may seem a small point; however, imagine if a hiring manager prints both of these items together. If they have identical fonts, this can only be seen as a positive.

Netiquette IQ - National Listening Day (The Friday After Thanksgiving) An Essential Part Of Netiquette

A very important and often overlooked part of etiquette and Netiquette is listening. Without this practice, Netiquette is reduced to a far lesser impact with any type of communication.
===============================================================

The 7 Secrets to Being a World Class Listener from care2.com
By: DianeMacEachern

Are you a lousy listener, or world class? If you have any doubts, check yourself against the 7 traits of a world-class listener identified below. Then put your listening skills to the test on the National Day of Listening the Friday after Thanksgiving Day and see what you learn!
The National Day of Listening was launched by the national oral history project StoryCorps in 2008, now widely heard on public radio stations nationwide. It was designed as an alternative to the shopping madness of “Black Friday” as a way to provide people of all backgrounds and beliefs with the opportunity to record, share and preserve the stories of their lives.
“We do this to remind one another of our shared humanity, to strengthen and build the connections between people, to teach the value of listening, and to weave into the fabric of our culture the understanding that everyone’s story matters,” says StoryCorps on its website.
To make recording the stories easier, StoryCorps set up free recording booths in Atlanta, San Francisco, Chicago, along with a mobile tour that travels the country. You can reserve a time to record your story here.
But before you do, you need to be prepared to listen to them. And as you probably know, not everyone is a good listener. Some people ask questions they don’t really want the answers to. Others ignore the answers altogether in order to aggrandize themselves.
Whether you record your stories on the National Day of Listening or not, here are the secrets to becoming a better listener no matter what story someone is telling.
1)   Listen more than you talk. As the saying goes, you have two ears and one mouth for a reason. Avoid saying “I” or “me” a lot.
2)   Use the answer to one question as the basis for the next question you ask. Asking connected questions will show that you’re honestly listening to the conversation.
3)   Don’t judge the answers or the questions. Your role as a listener is not to pass judgement on what you hear. In fact, the more judgmental you are, the shorter the conversation is likely to be!
4)   Don’t compare someone’s experiences to your own. Though you may think that the best way to listen is to compare the person’s experiences to your own, this is far from the truth. If the person is talking about dealing with a death in the family, you can share some expression of understanding, but avoid saying, “That’s exactly like how it was with me…” This can come off as offensive or insensitive, especially when you compare something really serious to your own less-intense experiences.
5)   Don’t try to help, at last not right away. My daughter has trained me not to step in with a solution when she tells me about a problem. In fact, she’ll say, “I wasn’t asking you to fix it. I just wanted you to know about it.” If you do feel like you have to give advice, make it neutral and not necessarily about what worked for you.
6)   Show empathy. Demonstrate you’re listening and that you care by acknowledging what the other person is saying. Try “echoing” or simply rephrasing what your conversation partner is saying.
7)   Don’t interrupt in the middle of a point. Be encouraging, but also be patient. Some questions are hard to ask and even harder to answer.
Even if you’re not listening for the National Day of Listening, Psychology Today says that being a good listener is part of being an effective communicator, and effective communications is “one of the keys to building resilience and maintaining balance in your life.”
“Listening is an active process.  It does not mean simply sitting silent and staring at someone.  To be effective in understanding another’s perspective and helping them through a difficult time, such as a diagnosis of cancer, you need to do things which show interest and genuine concern,” says Psychology Today.

Tabula Rosa Tech Term Of The Day - Imaga Metadata

from whatis,com
Image Megadata

Image metadata is text information pertaining to an image file that is embedded into the file or contained in a separate file that is associated with it.
Image metadata includes details relevant to the image itself as well as information about its production. Some metadata is generated automatically by the the device capturing the image. Additional metadata may be added manually and edited through dedicated software or general image editing software such as GIMP or Adobe Photoshop. Metadata can also be added directly on some digital cameras.
Image metadata can be very useful for cataloging and contextualizing visual information. Many visual artists find the features useful in providing data about themselves and their images.
Image metadata can also help protect intellectual property. It is important to note, however, that copyright information is not adequate protection as it can easily be stripped away. Also, as with other types of content, metadata security can be cumbersome, requiring extra measures to secure image metadata and protect it from unauthorized access.
The three main categories of image metadata are:
Technical metadata is mostly automatically generated by the camera. It includes camera details and settings such as aperture, shutter speed, ISO number, focal depth, dots per inch (DPI). Other automatically generated metadata include the camera brand and model, the date and time when the image was created and the GPS location where it was created.
Descriptive metadata is mostly added manually through imaging software by the photographer or someone managing the image. It includes the name of the image creator, keywords related to the image, captions, titles and comments, among many other possibilities. Effective descriptive metadata is what makes images more easily searchable.
Administrative metadata is mostly added manually. It includes usage and licensing rights, restrictions on reuse, contact information for the owner of the image.
Several standardized formats of metadata exist, including: Information Interchange Model (IPTC), Extensible Metadata Platform (XMP), EXchangable Image File (Exif), Dublin Core Metadata Initiative (DCMI) and Picture Licensing Universal System (PLUS).

Tabula Rosa Systems - Blog For Thanksgiving - Facts About Cyberbullying

Thanksgiving is an attitude that must be rooted in the ‘gift of life’ if we ever hope to be thankful for the ‘gifts’ of life.”
― Craig D. Lounsbrough

========================================================

Facts About Cyber Bullying

  • 99 percent of students have used the internet.
  • 48 percent of students use the internet for at least one hour a day.
  • One in four youth, aged 11 to 19 has been threatened via their computers or cell phones, including death threats.
  • Parents think mobile phone bullying is more common than e-mail and internet bullying, but still one in five thought it was not very common or never happened.
  • About 37 percent of parents are not worried their child could be bullied or threatened by mobile phone.
  • 20 percent of parents are not sure if cyber bullying via cell phone merits worry.
  • However, nearly 75 percent of parents whose children had a mobile phone received it between the ages of 8 and 13; the prime age for cyber bullying.
Visit www.stoptextbullying.com for more facts and resources on cyber bullying.

Cyberbullying Prevention
Knowledge and awareness are the key elements in preventing cyberbullying. There are many forms of Cyberbullying. It can be mean messages sent by cell phone, instant message or e-mail. It can be creating websites or online polls that are made for the purpose of putting a peer down. Or it can be posting embarrassing pictures, rumors or gossip on the internet. Cyberbullying is a challenging issue facing parents and teachers alike, but with a little knowledge and awareness you can prevent this type of relational aggression.

One of the easiest things you can do is educate yourself on cyberbullying. There are several website dedicated to informing teachers and parents on the dangerous and hurtful nature of cyberbullying. Spend a few minutes learning about all the forms of cyberbullying and prevention.

Some excellent resources include:
http://www.stopcyberbullying.org/ (has age appropriate suggestions)
http://www.wiredsafety.org/ (the world’s largest online safety and help group)
http://www.netbullies.com/pages/1/index.htm (a cyberlawyer helps protect kids online)

Once you know about cyberbullying you can talk to your child about it. Express your concerns whether they might be the victim, the bully, or even the bystander. Remind them to use netiquette, to be polite to others online just as you would if you were not online. If they are a victim of cyberbullying let them know the best thing they can do is not respond. Just like bullies who bully in person, they want you to answer to know they are upsetting you. Let them know that cyberbullying is hurtful and see if there is anything you can do to resolve the situation.

Remind you child not to send messages to someone when they are angry. It is best to wait until they have cooled down and had some time to think things through. Remember angry messages, known as “flames” can’t be unsent, so take some time and think. After they have cooled down then they can resolve the issue much better with a calm message. Girls usually regret sending flames, and once you have sent the message it is very hard to undo the damage. They create more problems than they solve.

Cyberbullying can become very serious. Sometimes it isn’t just bullying but girls may send cyberthreats. In either event, let your child know she should never erase or delete messages from cyberbullies. She doesn’t have to read the message, but it is important to have as evidence. You may need to contact the police if the bullying gets out of hand.

These are just some things you as a parent can do to prevent cyberbullying. It might also help to contact your child’s teacher to inform her of the issue. If your child is being bullied online there might also be problems at school, and letting the teachers be aware of the problems might help. You can also print some literature to give to the teacher so they are as knowledgeable as you are about this form of relational aggression.
