Tabula Rosa Systems Blog Of 9/26/2015 - Facebook Enables Web Encryption for Internet.org

Facebook enables web encryption for Internet.org

from www.theverge

By Russell Brandom

The system requires Internet.org to work as a proxy between users and the wider internet, compressing traffic for efficiency and stripping out any extraneous data requests, which ruled out conventional HTTPS. Since the proxy needs to inspect and potentially alter traffic as it passes through, it's impossible to deploy truly end-to-end web encryption. Instead, Internet.org has opted for a two-part system, encrypting all web traffic between the user and Internet.org servers, then passing along the traffic to the host with whatever encryption the host wishes to deploy. (Encrypted access is also available through Internet.org's Android app, which launched in June.) The result secures traffic whenever it travels over the public web, but still gives Internet.org central access to the all the data sent through the service.
THE NEW SYSTEM GIVES INTERNET.ORG USERS A SECURE WAY TO CONNECT
At the same time, Internet.org is pledging not to store any data on how people actually use the services. In its new data retention policy, the service promises to only store domain name information and the amount of data used, along with device information that would be visible even if the traffic were encrypted. More detailed information will still be visible to internet.org, but the platform says it won't collect that data.

The new system gives internet.org users a secure way to connect, solving one of the biggest problems facing the project. Still, it will do little to address the concerns of net neutrality advocates, who see Internet.org giving Facebook too much power over the services available to users in the developing world. The service has already expanded access to one billion people across 19 different countries, moving into South Africa, Senegal, and Bolivia this past summer.

Tabula Rosa Systems Special Blog - It Has Happened - IPv4 Addresses Are Exhausted!

After years of warning, zero day has arrived. There are no more IPv4 addresses. All netizens should be aware of this and understand the changes that will be occuring!

NO EASY FIXES AS INTERNET RUNS OUT OF ADDRESSES
Editors’ note on Thursday, September 24, 2015: The American Registry for Internet Numbers announced today that it had given out the last of the IPv4 addresses it had in its free pool for North America. The article below is from 2011 and provides backstory on what that means.
The internet has run out of room.
Like a prairie with no more vacant land to homestead or a hip area code with no more cellphone numbers, the pool of available numeric internet addresses has been completely allocated as of Thursday (.pdf).
With that, the frontier has closed. The internet — in its current form — is now completely colonized. All that’s left is to divide the allocated properties into ever-smaller portions, or to start trading what’s already been assigned.
This change will have no immediate effect on ordinary people, but will eventually force any company that wants to be on the internet to reckon with a complicated and potentially expensive technology transition.
It could also introduce widespread delays and other strange behavior into the internet at large.
“In a sense the net’s going to get stickier,” says John Heidemann, a computer scientist at the University of Southern California who has done a survey of the distribution of internet addresses (shown above). “It’ll be harder to do things that used to be easy.”
The shortage of addresses could eventually slow down your favorite web services, make it harder for websites to verify your identity, and complicate the design of services that depend on computer-to-computer connections, like peer-to-peer file sharing, Skype and more.
The change is going to happen gradually, over a period of years, but it will happen, say experts who have studied the problem, and it starts today.
“This is 100 percent a real issue,” says Martin J. Levy, director of IPv6 strategy at Hurricane Electric, a provider of high-bandwidth data and collocation services that has been predicting the exhaustion of addresses for some time now. “We are dealing with a finite resource. We are going to run out. And we are going to have build a new system that gets around that issue.”
“It’s not really a shortage so much as exhaustion. It’s gone,” Kumar Reddy, a director of technical marketing at Cisco, says about the address space.
HOW THINGS WORK NOW
The data-delivery scheme used by the vast majority of the net, known as Internet Protocol version 4, uses a series of four numbers (each ranging from 0 to 255) to uniquely identify every machine that’s directly connected to the internet. That gives a total of about 4 billion possible IP addresses. These numbers, such as 63.84.95.56, underlie the more user-friendly domain name system, which uses URLs like www.wired.com.
IP addresses are like telephone digits, in that there’s a finite number of them. Unlike the telephone system, however, there’s no equivalent to the 718 or 346 area codes to expand to when Manhattan’s 212 is full. It’s as if every possible area code from 001 to 999 had already been utilized or reserved.
In some cases those “area codes” are full of paying customers. In other cases the numbers are simply being held for future use or reserved for technical reasons. But the bottom line is no new addresses are available.
It will take a while for the effects to trickle down to your level.
The organization responsible for allocating these numbers is the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority, which delegates blocks of IP addresses to five regional registries. It is IANA that allocated its last available IP address blocks to the regional authorities on Thursday.
The regional registries, in turn, allocate their IP addresses to companies, ISPs and telcos. With no new blocks coming from IANA, they will start to run out of their address pools over the next several years, starting with the Asia-Pacific authority, known as APNIC, probably in mid-2011.
As regional authorities run out of available IP addresses, their clients will too. That means ISPs and companies will have difficulty assigning unique IP addresses to their customers, employees and servers as soon as this year, starting in Asia.
When that happens, those companies have a choice. They can switch to the next generation of the Internet Protocol, known as IPv6, which has 2128available addresses. That’s enough to give 5×1028 addresses to every human being on Earth — no danger of running out of addresses there.
THE PROBLEM WITH THE SOLUTION
But many popular sites, such as Wired’s website, don’t yet have IPv6 capability.  In fact, less than 0.25 percent of the internet is wired to work with IPv6, which means that if you’re using IPv6, there’s not a lot of web content to browse.

Netiquette IQ Blog Of The Day - Brain to Brain Communication Via The Internet

Some day, we may be emailing without a computer! Some ground-breaking news on this has already been achieved. This will still necessitate Netiquette and I can only wonder what new rules might be required!

==========================================================
www.nbcnews.com
Researchers have managed to send thoughts over the Internet, using a direct brain-to-brain connection and a big magnet.
It's not very efficient — the volunteers could only send "yes" or "no" answers to one another. But using EEG (electroencephalographs) to read brain signals, and a big magnet on the other end to transmit it, their players got the correct answer 72 percent of the time.
"This is the most complex brain-to-brain experiment, I think, that's been done to date in humans," said Andrea Stocco, an assistant professor of psychology at the University of Washington.
"They have to interpret something they're seeing with their brains," added Stocco's colleague Chantel Prat, associate professor of psychology. "It's not something they've ever seen before."
"THIS IS THE MOST COMPLEX BRAIN-TO-BRAIN EXPERIMENT, I THINK, THAT'S BEEN DONE TO DATE IN HUMANS."
The volunteers played a version of the "20 questions" game. One person looked at a word on a screen — in one test it was the name of an animal — and the other, sitting in a lab a mile away, had three chances to guess what the animal was. To make it simple, the questions were pre-arranged: "Can it fly?", "Is it a mammal?" and "Is it a pet?"
There were eight possible answers: shark, turtle, bear, dog, vulture, parakeet, bat and sugar glider. That last one was added to make the experiment more entertaining, Stocco said.
The volunteer in the know, called the respondent, could look at either a "yes" or "no" flashing light on a computer screen. Her thought patterns were recorded as EEG activity and transmitted over the internet to a transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) device attached to the back of the head of the "questioner".
University of Washington postdoctoral student Caitlin Hudac, the “inquirer,” wears a cap that uses transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMG) to deliver brain signals from the other participant, the “respondent.” University of Washington
The questioner sent one of the three questions to the respondent via computer, the respondent looked at the "yes" or "no" light, and that signal went back to the TMS machine. A "yes" answer

Tabula Rosa Systems Term Of The Day - Technical Debt

Technical debt from whatis.com
In software development, technical debt is a metaphor equating Extreme Programming's incremental, get-something-started approach with the easy acquisition of money through fast loans.

"The technical debt that exists in most major software products, including security products, is perhaps the most significant barrier in maintaining adequate levels of software security in an enterprise." -- Nick Lewis
A monetary loan, of course, has to be paid back with interest. In terms of software development, payback requires the developers to refactor the program as they learn more about how it interacts with other applications and which features end users are using, or not using, or wish they had. Just as monetary debt can easily spiral out of control if not managed properly, so can technical debt.
In business, the metaphor is often used to illustrate the concept that an organization will end up spending more in the future by not addressing a technical problem when it first presents itself. The assumption is that if an organization chooses to ignore a course of action it knows should be taken, the organization will risk paying for it in terms of time, money or damage to the organization's reputation in the future.

Tabula Rosa Systems Blog Of 9/23/15 - The Importance Of Fonts, Even On Email And Resumes!

Fonts are too often overlooked and this can prove to be a big mistake. The following is an excerpt from my book, "You're Hired!". See below for more information. If you are looking for employment, you should serious consider it.
=====================================================

Even Résumés Should Employ the Principle of Netiquette

Many job applicants do not equate sending a résumé with the need to use Netiquette. Keep in mind the need to balance items such as tone, fonts and content with your email and other forms of electronic communication. Do not let one form of expression suppress all of the others. These should be made complementary. Remember that a résumé should deliver upon all that is mentioned in the introductory email. If they are not balanced, the recipient might react negatively and lose the interest or enthusiasm that compelled him or her to read your email and open your résumé in the first place.
Here are some basic Netiquette rules for the cohesion of your cover email and your résumé:

1.    Keep font styles and attributes (e.g., size, weight) identical.

2.    Have the same contact information.

3.    Avoid repetition of any words.

4.    Show the same tone and enthusiasm throughout your communication.
Maintain the same formatting. Many recruiting managers will assume, even if subconsciously, that you have a positive attitude when they see consistency. By maintaining consistency, it can be agreed that it may be assumed that you are organized and “stable.”
