How do birds communicate? By singing. And now it’s the turn of the machines. A new crop of businesses are now creating what’s referred to as the Internet of Sound.
A Brief History
Let’s rewind. The history of sound-as-signal is deep. In the beginning, horns, drums and bells rang the alarm, roused the congregation and directed military troops and urban workers: city-sized ringtones guided our lives. These sounds were primarily communicative, musicality was a secondary concern.
Analog sonic codes can be found in unlikely places: composers from Mozart to Schumann hid private audio-numerological jokes in their music, underwater modems guided naval vessels, telephone networks babbled dial-tone enharmonics.
For many (including me), the first experience of the Internet was the grackle squawk of a modem, of PCM-encoded games on cassette — sound not as data per se but as a by-product of data transmission, designed neither for the air nor the ear, but for the wire.
We arrive at the digital age in modern systems encoding URLs as sequences of notes for over-the-air transmission as tiny audio clips that can now be decoded in real-time on mobile devices. In the weightless world of digital, it’s easy to forget that information is a thing, it’s stuff — so why not sound? Now in the modern era, the machines can sing. And they can sing anything, from pictures to payments.
The Internet Of Sound Is Here
This is what is called the Internet of Sound, the speakernet. Using sound to send links to remote networks is one thing, but local lookup tables on-device obviate the need for another network: the sound is the network. Today’s technology is sufficient at present only to send tiny amounts of data through or above audible ranges, but good enough to encode every URL ever created as audio lasting a few seconds or less. 

Why Is This A Powerful Idea?
Consider this: There are more tiny, cheap speakers on the planet than there are people. Why not leverage this ubiquitous, commodity technology? We see a huge opportunity to connect a very large number of devices simply and intuitively.
Sound is in many ways the first, and yet the most neglected, network.
Sound can go where other networks do not, and sound can be a valuable part of the network ecosystem alongside existing protocols. We can trivially repurpose ATMs, TVs, toys, radios and tablets already — if it carries sound, it can send data.
How Does It Work?
There are a number of techniques for building the Internet of Sound, loosely comprising three categories:
Descriptive: Selected pre-existing features of the signal uniquely disambiguate one signal from another, aka ‘audio fingerprinting.’ Examples include music-recognition services, like Shazam orSoundhound. Network geeks, forgive me: While it’s a stretch to call these true speakernet technologies, even music can be repurposed for point-to-point communication.
Additive: Retrievable but human-indetectable features (aka ‘audio watermarking’) are added to an arbitrary audio signal. Examples include codes used for audience-tracking in broadcast radio. One method uses tiny, imperceptibly fast echoes, normally suppressed by human hearing, used by companies like Infrasonicsmufin and Civolution. These give roughly equivalent bitrates to fingerprinting.
Coded: Instead of plucking a sound from a large online library of known sounds, or adding watermarks on the fly, the entire audio signal (pitch, tone-color, phase or amplitude) is itself the code. Modern examples designed to be robust to noise, distortion and compression include multi-pitch systems like Chirp and LISNR. Latterly, Google Tone, another form of multiple frequency encoding, has entered the market. Pure-code signals ‘in plain hearing’ have the advantage of being much faster than the first two techniques. 
But…
All methods have relative strengths and weaknesses. Often these are strongly orthogonal from usability and engineering perspectives. The signal can be rich in data, but hideous to hear. The signal can be embedded imperceptibly in a string quartet, but encode miniscule amounts of data. The signal may be hopelessly fragile to real-world noise or reverberation, and so on. The signal may be both unlovely and unreliable at the same time.
Data over audio is necessarily slow. Data over pleasant-sounding audio is slower still — thus, the trick is to send pointers instead of files. Sonic data raises issues of security: One-to-many data sharing is hugely useful, but insecure (by design); but what if you want to share to just one person? This is an interesting challenge — novel solutions are being worked on as we speak.
Lastly, most importantly, do we really need the Internet of Sound? I believe so. Sound is in many ways the first, and yet the most neglected, network — a bridge over the last few feet, a medium that goes where other networks cannot. 
Take Care
The sound itself matters. It is vital that sound is used respectfully, with care for the sonic environment. We have enough casual and arrogant noise pollution as it is, from headphone spill to street noise, to sonic UIs as a tedious afterthought: mere keypress beeps.
As audio geeks and sound designers, we take great care when designing the sounds we send, and we explicitly model our audio on sound from nature, specifically from the language of birds. The Internet of Sound needs to be a humane form of communication: that is, one that respects users by putting the human ear first and foremost. 
Sound Is Everywhere
It’s time to get excited. The opportunities for the Internet of Sound are frankly mind-(if not ear-) boggling, from the range of applications available to the ease of deployment. The potential now exists to re-engineer speech, music and sound design for data sharing, and my company is active here.
New hardware will accelerate uptake: Ever-cheaper dedicated DSP (Digital Signal Processing) chips in mobiles and connected devices for always-on listening and hands-free UIs increase the reach and efficiency of Internet of Sound products. We have already seen audio used in payments to send bitcoin over the radio, in classrooms to share pictures and on web pages to pass maps to mobiles. And we’re only just getting started. Bottom line — wherever there is sound, there is data — from dumb phones to doorbells.
The Internet of Sound is coming, and one thing is for sure — you ain’t heard nothing yet.

HOW TO SEND ENCRYPTED EMAILS

Long has the war for email privacy been fought – and it looks we’ll keep fighting far into the future. People have always wanted to make sure than only the recipient can read email messages. Some worry about identity theft and sensitive company data that can be stolen. Others dislike the idea of government prying and interference (the current powers of the NSA have unsurprisingly led to a resurgence in email encryption).
While the average email service doesn’t do much to protect your email – which is why they can be collected and used quite easily by others – there is another level of service that offers email encryption. Essentially, this encodes email contents into gibberish and only lets the recipient decode the email and read it. If encrypted emails sound good to you, you’re in luck. There are dozens of encryption options available these days, from plugins to web services. Let’s take a look at the best and how to use them.

Quick words on PGP and encryption
Let’s talk a little bit about encryption so you get an idea of what you are jumping into. Cryptography software used for communication dates all the way back to 1991 when Phil Zimmermann created what he called PGP or Pretty Good Privacy. While that’s not exactly the most confident name, PGP proved its worth and quickly became the go-to source for encryption in the 1990s.

This original PGP worked by creating a public key and a private key, the former used to encrypt a message and the latter to decrypt it so it can be read. It also involved elements of crowd-sourced trust and other important elements of web security. You can read all about it if you want to.
Eventually PGP was replaced with the OpenPGP standard and GnuPG, but the term PGP stuck around, which is why you still here it used today when discussing email encryption. Today’s email encryption tools tend to use various implementations of this modern-day PGP.
Encryption with your current email
Probably the easiest way to get encrypted emails is to use your current email client or service – that way you don’t have to get used to any new software. Fortunately, there are several encryption options for popular email services like:
§  Gmail: Gmail does not yet support native email encryption. This might change in the future, but for now you need to do a little work to enable encryption for this platform. Head on over to the Chrome store and look for encryption extensions. One of the most popular is Mailvelope, which works with several major webmail providers and uses Google’s own tools for encryption. Another popular option isSecure Mail, although this works only between two Chrome Gmail users. Both add basic encryption buttons that allow you to encrypt an email for a specific reader. The process is pretty easy.
§  Outlook: Possibly because of its popularity in the business world, Outlook does support encryption right out of the box, but the encryption tool is well hidden. To encrypt a message, you need to head over to the Options tab, go to More Options, select Message Options, go to Security Settings, and then chooseEncrypt message contents and attachments. Whew. You can also choose to encrypt all your outgoing messages through the Trust Center. If you use Office 365, you can also use message encryption through this service, along with some other handy security features. You have to purchase it along with Microsoft Azure Rights Management ($2 per user per month).
§  Yahoo mail: Yahoo mail actually borrows some of Google’s tech to help protect its email. There are therefore OpenPGP encryption plugins that you can download to add some extra security for your emails. However, if you use Chrome then by all means go straight to downloading Mailvelope, because it also works with Yahoo emails and it’s a simple add-on.

Web-based encrypted emails
Your other option in the big encryption game is web-based email encrypters, which allow you to login into a separate piece of software on the web and use it to send your emails or add extra features to your old services. Some are made for home use, and some are made for more professional environments.
§  Sendinc: Sendinc is a handy encryption service for small business owners and others. You can hop onto the web interface to send emails if you want, or check out the platform integration with Microsoft Outlook, Gmail, and others. However, you will have to pay for it – the cheapest version of Sendinc costs $4 per month.
§  Virtru: Virtru offers a broad selection of add-ons for Android, Apple, Outlook, Firefox, and other platforms, but offers no webmail services, so you will have to do some micromanaging on your old email. Flip the Virtru switch when you want to start encrypting messages, and turn it off when you don’t. You can revoke encryption whenever you want, and it works with a “keyless” encryption that makes it easier for email receivers. The basic version is totally free.
§  Lockbin: Lockbin skips the whole add-on phase and goes straight to making web mail encryption easy. You can go straight to the Lockbin website and type up an email right now if you want to, including attachments and your password/key. Send as many as you like for free, as long as its just you on the network. If you have more than one user, the price jumps dramatically to $10 per month.
§  ProtonMail: ProtonMail is a more unique case. This is a Swiss-based project that uses what they call “zero access architecture” to create an email client so people can send messages that cannot be overseen by anyone else, with a particular nod toward governments. The encryption happens entirely on the client device and ProtonMail has no access to user data, so it can’t dig into user accounts and forward any details. ProtonMail is still in the early venture stages, and it is a bit unclear how effective it will really be – and how it will fair against new competitors like Tutanota. If you are interested, you can request to join the beta.
§  Hushmail: Hushmail gets some points for being around for a very long time and offering options for individuals, businesses, healthcare and resellers. You can also create unlimited email aliases and download a specific mobile version for your phone. However, it loses a lot of points because Hushmail apparentlycannot protect your data from the NSA or any other government agencies.

Distributed cloud is the application of cloud computing technologies to interconnect data and applications served from multiple geographic locations.

Distributed, in an information technology (IT) context, means that something is shared among multiple systems which may also be in different locations. Distributed cloud speeds communications for global services and enables more responsive communications for specific regions.
Cloud providers use the distributed model to enable lower latency and provide better performance for cloud services. Beyond the cloud provider context, two other examples of distributed cloud are public resource computing and the volunteer cloud.
Public resource computing is a cross between cloud computing and distributed computing that involves computers in geographically dispersed locations connected to collaborate on compute-intensive and/or computer-intensive tasks. Some examples of this are Folding@home, BOINC and SETI@home. 
In a volunteer cloud, the resources of member computers are connected through a single service or hub to collaboratively construct and configure cloud infrastructure

Although Internet membership sites, including emails, chat rooms and other forms of social networks, limit the use of their services to adults or young adults (over 13 years), it is an open secret that much younger children commonly operate in platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Tumblr, in addition to having email accounts of their own. ComScore, a firm that measures Internet traffic, estimates that 3.6 million of Facebook's 153 million monthly visitors in USA are under 12.
In many cases, children join network sites (including emails) with full knowledge of their parents, and lie about their ages. Although many parents do not mind the "minor fib" that allows children to be online, and are aware of the risks of children on the internet (exposure to inappropriate content, cyberbullying, sexting, pedophilia etc.), there is less clarity on legal issues. The legal challenges that are associated with the use of social network sites by underage users, such as validity of membership, consenting to share or be tagged in photographs and liability for certain actions, remain unknown compared to more (un)popular issues such as cyber crimes and privacy concerns.
 Governments around the world have been addressing the problems in Internet material that are either illegal in the real world and/or harmful or unsuitable for minors. The types of problems perceived by countries differ depending on the political, social and cultural backgrounds. For example, while governments of most western countries encourage self-regulation by the Internet industry and discretion of the end-user in filtering technologies, countries such as China, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates and Vietnam block access to content deemed "unsuitable for adults". Child pornography is another area that faces varied legal implications in various countries. It, is perhaps one of the most dangerous issues that requires urgent and serious legislative crackdown. The worldwide adult industry revenue in 2006 was $97.06 billion, of which $13 billion was in the United States; a disturbing number indeed. But what is more rattling is that 40 percent of visitors of such sites had both sexually victimized children and were in possession of child pornography.
Formulating rights and formal limits to the use of Internet by children (and adults) is a challenging task. Setting the age for the acquisition of rights is, as described by UNICEF, a complex matter that must "balance the concept of the child as a subject of rights whose evolving capacities must be respected with the concept of the State's obligation to provide special protection". Dr Ellen Helsper, associate professor in media and communications at the London School of Economics, believes thatresearch on children's online lives must aim to inform regulators about appropriate legislation. However, a common legislation is challenging, if not impossible because the impact of the internet (and social networking, which have almost become synonymous to "Internet") is not uniform for all users; age, socio-economic background, psychological characteristics, location and education influence how children, indeed people in general, are affected by online material.
The rules and laws that apply to the real world may not be directly applicable to the cyberworld. Online interactions present new kinds of relationships across time and space, which would not be possible in the offline world. For one, it becomes very easy for identities to be hidden or misrepresented, making accountability and track-back difficult. Lack of social roles and traditional cues of conversations provides scope fordissimulation, fraud, exploitation and abuse of trust.
But that does not mean the Internet is a free-for-all jungle out there. Government and industry-sponsored schemes have been designed to provide various layers of protection to children online. These include age-rating classification schemes, filtering systems to block unsuitable or harmful content, formulation of laws and acts etc., which attempt to facilitate the fostering of trust in the Internet for learning, information and communication.
The Communications Decency Act, 1996, was perhaps the first legislative action by the US government to regulate content on the Internet. It was aimed at protecting children from inappropriate content on the Internet and the Act restricted speech of adults which, ironically, in the real world would have been perfectly legal. Naturally, in due course, the Act was deemed by the Supreme Court as imposing 'impermissible burden' on the free expression rights of adults and hence, was ruled out as unconstitutional.
The Communication Decency Act was followed by the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act of 1998 (COPPA), which regulates collection of personal information by persons or entities from children below 13 years of age. It also provides guidelines and rules for designing privacy policies, which a website operator must follow when designing a site that could be used by minors and stipulates when and how to seek verifiable consent from a parent or guardian to protect children's privacy and safety online.
The Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA) aims to protect children from obscene or harmful content over the Internet in schools and libraries. All institutions that receive grants and discounts for Internet through the E-rate program are subjected to CIPA, which ensures that children using the internet in these places are not exposed to obscene material, child pornography and harmful messages. Organizations coming under the CIPA are required to actively monitor the online activities of users and educate minors about appropriate online behavior, including ethics to be followed during interactions with others on social media.
The US FBI has a separate department to investigate high-tech crimes, including cyber-based terrorism, espionage, computer intrusions, and major cyber fraud.CyberTipline offers a convenient and safe place to report cyber crimes, especially against children. i-SAFE, a non-profit foundation aimed at educating youth to make their Internet experience safe and responsible, works with law enforcement agencies to foster cyber-safe communities. Help is available from child safety organizations, the Attorney General's office and other organizations to become educated on Internet safety issues.
It is heartening to note that the Federal government of USA extensively funds task forces to support state and local law enforcement in protecting children against Internet crimes, with beneficial outcomes. For example, between April and May 2015, Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Forces, funded by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP), arrested 1,140 child predators from 41 states in an operation called "Operation Broken Heart". The task forces have also delivered more than 2,200 presentations on Internet safety to more than 186,000 youth and adults during these two months.
These efforts aside, the fit of Internet into the current system of jurisdiction continues to remain ambiguous in many countries, including America, and Internet users do not have a unified set of rules or laws to live by. Formulating generalized laws is challenged by the pervasiveness of the Internet over nations with widely differing real-time laws, and by the complicated architecture of the Internet that makes it easy for people to obfuscate their identity and location.
Any law is enforceable only with cooperation from all parties involved - the legislature, executive, judiciary, and most importantly the public. Legal systems that oversee the Internet are geographically restricted. Such a restricted system would put a sizeable burden on state and local authorities, without ample support from the users themselves.

Further, I regularly consult for the Gerson Lehrman Group, a worldwide network of subject matter experts and have been a contributor to numerous blogs and publications.
