I’m talking about our electronic tether to work as well as the most convenient form of social escapism from the physical world – email. I have this game I play once a week, build a storyline by stringing together the headings of spam emails. Is it the story about beautiful Russian women fighting to save the world from coming to an end because a special scientist has been jailed for revealing NASA’s secret for curing hearing loss and is being tortured with certain physical non-performance? Or is it a story about how to spice up life with an extra-marital affair? Oh right, that story is already taken by Josh Duggar. Not good use of my time you say. For a white collar worker it’s entertaining while standing in the TSA line. Like it or not we are addicted to email. Adobe Systems released the results from their latest email survey that included 400 interviews with U.S. white collar workers and Adobe’s Digital Index (ADI) which analyzed 17 billion visits coming from email. The study highlights are: ·         Americans are addicted to email and check it around the clock ·         People are guilty of checking email in awkward locations or times ·         Email is and will remain a cornerstone of workplace culture ·         Millennials check email more frequently than other age groups ·         Email marketers need to do a better job to improve conversion rates Study respondents estimate they spend 6.3 hours each weekday checking their email. 3.2 hours spent checking work email and 3.1 hours checking personal email. Nine in 10 respondents check work email outside of work as well as check their personal email while at work. Thirty percent check their email in the morning while still in bed.  Clearly, FOMO (fear of missing out) is an affliction regardless of age and not just reserved for teenagers. Americans most commonly check their emails while: ·         Watching TV/movies (70%) ·         In bed (52%) ·         On vacation (50%) ·         On the phone (43%) ·         In the bathroom (42%) ·         Driving (18%) If you’re a millennial, those stats go way up.  And email shows no signs of going away with 47% of respondents expect their use of email will increase over the next five years.  It is one of the preferred communication and collaboration methods at work because it’s perceived as efficient and an easy way to share content. This is fabulous news if you’re an email marketer.  You have a captive audience but consumers find it annoying to have to scroll to read the entire email (28%) or wait for images to load (21%). Interestingly, consumers want to see fewer emails (39%), less repetitive emails as well as less annoying or intrusive (32%) ones. I would be thrilled with less email from brands that I don’t buy from and who got my name from a “partner.” Email that is more personalized (and not just using my first name or truncating it to “Christ”) and contextually relevant to me and my habits are key to increasing conversion.  Just because I’m a boomer female that lives in California and drives a Prius doesn’t mean I want weekly emails that share the local produce purchased by various “hot” eateries in Palo Alto, CA.  That doesn’t help me.  The study found that 34% of respondents have had to “create a new email address or switch email providers due to an overwhelming amount of spam.”   If you’re in tech, that percentage is 53%. The Adobe study found that retail websites drive the most web traffic from email when they are sent to customers who actually want them and receive them in the morning, while still in bed, or during working hours. Adobe ADI cites that “local visitors, who spend more and convert at higher rates, are twice as likely to come from email as from the average channel” assuming the email was sent to their mobile device. The obsession with email is driving an increasing number of people to go through email detox. Four in 10 have “tried a self-imposed email detox, at an average success rate of 87% lasing on average five days.”   My best email detox was a two week vacation in Bora-Bora where the data plan was massively expensive.  Know what I learned? The world didn’t end and if it was really important, the person will email you again as I checked my email right after the plane’s wheels touched down in LAX. System Routes Internet Traffic Around Countries You Don't Trust By Jeremy Hsu Posted 24 Aug 2015 | 14:00 GMT from ieeespectrum.org Whenever someone sends a website request or email, Internet data packets countries, such as China. A new system provides a way for Internet users to route their data around specified “forbidden” countries and gives proof of whether or not the routing succeeded, its inventors revealed last week. The Alibi Routing system relies on a peer-to-peer network to relay data packets around specified forbidden countries on their way to a final destination. In this case, the “peers” are other Internet users running the Alibi Routing software. The system provides proof of successful or unsuccessful routing by calculating whether a packet was at a specific geographic location far enough away from the undesired countries so that data could not have passed through. "With recent events, such as censorship of Internet traffic, suspicious 'boomerang routing' where data leaves a region only to come back again, and monitoring of users' data, we became increasingly interested in this notion of empowering users to have more control over what happens with their data," said Dave Levin, an assistant research scientist in the Institute for Advanced Computer Studies at the University of Maryland, in a press release. Levin and his colleagues presented their research last week at the Association for Computing Machinery Special Interest Group on Data Communication (ACM SIGCOMM) conference in London.  They developed the system with funding from the U.S. National Science Foundation, the Office of Naval Research, and an Amazon Web Services in Education grant.  Most Internet users typically don’t have much control over the path their Internet data travels. That can prove problematic because routers in certain parts of the world will modify data passing through and effectively censor the content. In 2012, researchers showed that Domain Name System (DNS) requests passing through China undergo the same risk of censorship as similar requests coming from a Chinese resident. The Alibi Routing software provides proof of the data’s path by using measurements of round-trip times and the GPS coordinates of routers. Its “alibi” system chooses relays far away enough from user-specified forbidden zones that the data would undergo a noticeable lag if it traveled through both the relay and the forbidden zone. Researchers tested Alibi Routing with a simulated network of 20,000 participants. They also chose forbidden countries such as China, Japan,, North Korea, Saudi Arabia, Syria, the United States and others. Success in finding an “alibi” route depends in part on how central the specified forbidden zones are to Internet routing. But the simulations suggested the system could find a safe route more than 85 percent of the time. The team hopes to publicly release Alibi Routing as an Internet browser plug-in by the end of 2015. Such a system could be immediately deployed without requiring “public key infrastructure (PKI) or modifications to existing routing protocols or switching hardware; it does not require synchronized clocks; and it does not require access to any information about the underlying routing topology of the Internet,” the researchers wrote in their conference paper. Numerous websites are now popping up that promise to let you see whether you have been affected by the hack. You enter your email address, and the site checks whether it is in the data dump. One of these is HaveIBeenPwned.com. It sets itself apart from other similar services by not just checking the Ashley Madison database, but also cross-referencing it with a huge archive of previously hacked customer details. This includes the Adobe hack, which affected a staggering 150 million accounts, as well as a Snapchat hack that affected 4.6 million accounts and an Adult Friend Finder hack that affected 3.9 million accounts. Altogether, the site can check your email against 220 million potentially compromised accounts drawn from 53 hacked websites. Troy Hunt, the developer behind HaveIBeenPwned.com, has set the Ashley Madison data so that users will receive an email only if they've been hacked. This means you can't use the website to see whether your friends or coworkers have been affected. In a blog post, he says he has done this because he doesn't "believe it's responsible to make all the AM accounts discoverable by anyone" because the data is "sensitive." It's also worth checking even if you have never signed up for Ashley Madison yourself. The site doesn't actually verify the email addresses users provide, so it's easy to sign up with a fake address, or one belonging to someone else. You could be in there without even knowing it. It’s called, descriptively, Name2Email.  Here’s how it works. After you install the Name2Email extension, you simple open Gmail and enter the person’s first name, last name, and work domain email — starting with @ — into the “compose” box. Name2Email will then automatically generate the most common corporate email patterns for you. Next, simply hover your mouse over the generated addresses, and when you see a popup with the person’s name appear, bingo — that’s the right address. Commenters on Product Hunt have already suggested that a little machine learning could eventually reduce the number of possible emails the extension pulls up. This extension is similar to Rapportive, which lets you see if your guesses for someone’s corporate email are correct. But Name2Email does the guessing work for you. And while getting the internet underground is hard enough, making Wi-Fi work on a subway platform in particular is even harder. Despite being enclosed and technically indoors, the subway is actually considered an "outdoor environment." According to Cornish, subway temperatures can fluctuate from below freezing to over 100 degrees. That's a huge difference from putting an electronic system into an office building, which may never change more than ten degrees year-round, depending on who's got control of the thermostat.   SUBWAY TEMPERATURES CAN FLUCTUATE FROM BELOW FREEZING TO OVER 100 DEGREES The other problem is water. And not just puddles or errant drips from street-level. "The entire stations are pressure hosed," Cornish says, not that you would necessarily think that when you go down there. But electrical components don't get special treatment in the subway station; they need to be able to handle the hose. Add to that a persistent sprinkling of brake dust—particles of metal sprayed into the air all day as trains pull into the station—and you can see why you'd need some seriously rugged equipment.  NYC's Wi-Fi project is coming along, but other cities already have it beat. In 2007, Hong Kong and Buenos Aires became the first cities to install Wi-Fi in their subway systems. Today, Hong Kong's subway is fully connected, while Buenos Aires has only 13 of 84 stations connected, despite early plans to the contrary. Complications are unfortunate but inevitable. There are plenty of places for rollout to get hung up. Every subway station in unique in terms of depth and layout. Unfortunately that requires creating an individual design for each, and in New York, Cornish notes, that means each and every station has to be approved separately. "There's a significant amount of engineering and project management behind each station's design and approval." It's a long and arduous process that has to be completed long before the actual wiring begins. While being disconnected underground may cut into your Facebook time, subterranean internet has its upsides as well. A 2014 Gallup poll showed that the average American with a full time job worked between 44-49 hours a week. The workday bleeds into the rest of our lives thanks in large part to round-the-clock email, texts, and other forms of communication. It's a well-covered issue.From Monday through Friday, your average 50-minute daily commute might be your only true respite. Sure, internet will certainly make it easier to stomach getting stuck at the station, but it'll hurt when you get that email from work just as you're descending the steps. So try to enjoy the freedom of zero bars while you still have the chance. It won't last long.
