Teaching
children how to behave in class by respecting each other and the classroom is a
bedrock of education, but now some schools in California are taking this to a
new level. Starting this year, several California school districts will for the first time be
testing students on how well they have learned skills like self-control and
conscientiousness.
All teachers
understand the importance of nurturing social-emotional skills, a vague term
but one which includes self-respect, respect for others, ability to focus, and
perseverance. Running a classroom involves paying attention to these skills
alongside teaching the curriculum.
Indeed, if
students are lacking in these abilities, it can be impossible to actually
instruct. Many kindergarten teachers affirm that skills like having a sense of
confidence, the ability to solve simple problems and work cooperatively with
peers, as well as to follow directions, are far more important for new students
than any academic skills.
Many schools
have been emphasizing social-emotional learning since 2011, after an analysis of 213 school-based programs that were
teaching these skills found an improvement of 11 percentile points in overall
academic achievement.
Now the term
“grit” is being used to describe the combination of all the social-emotional
skills that will indicate the future success of students. If you’re curious how
