Tabula Rosa Systems Post - From Vinton Cerf - Internet And Society In The Future

Internet and Society - Looking Toward the Future

By Vinton G. Cerf
Past President, ACM
Vice President and Chief Internet Evangelist, Google
The Internet is seemingly everywhere, thanks to smartphones, high-speed radio and fiber networks, social network applications, and the Web. But, in fact, only about 3 billion people are thought to be online. It is plausible that another 3 billion may find their way onto the Internet by the end of the decade. Moreover, we are at the leading edge of the arrival of many Internet-enabled devices: the Internet of Things.
Our daily lives and the infrastructure we depend on are increasingly affected by the operational reliability, security, safety and privacy of the Internet and its applications. We hear, with increasing frequency, about the penetration of systems containing vitally important personal information. We worry, with good reason, about our privacy and our safety as more devices become observable and even controllable through the Internet, often using applications on our smartphones.

We wonder about the nature of work in an increasingly online environment and what jobs will come and which will go with the increasing use of computers and other programmable devices. We see huge benefits from the information we find on the vast information universe of the Web and at the same time we feel challenged by the need to evaluate that information for its accuracy and utility. These challenges will not recede.
Science is increasingly about computation, big data analysis and simulation, as we can see from reports about computational biology, physics, chemistry and climate dynamics. More and more, computers lie at the center of a data-centric universe. At ACM, we can see some extraordinary improvements in natural language translation and understanding, machine learning, and image processing, among many other topics, found in the publications of the ACM Digital Library. We have tools today that can put us in touch with all of the world's information at the click of a mouse. ACM's Special Interest Groups are drawing diverse and wide-ranging talent into the dialog of the future of computing and its applications.
Wearable devices are coming or have arrived that make the notion of "quantified self" a reality. Continuous monitoring and gathering of vital signs and health information makes it possible to detect abnormal conditions before they become a serious hazard. We can establish a "baseline" for "normal" and alert others to departures from that baseline for individuals we are tracking.
Rapid analysis of genetic samples is leading to a nearly instantaneous ability to detect exposure to a wide range of pathogens and also to a deeper understanding of the role of the "bacteriome" that resides in our digestive system and plays such an important role in our health and well-being. We have evolved together and our digestive system has become a critical part of our immune system. We are what our bacteria eat and excrete!
Computers, computational algorithms, new forms of computing such as quantum computing, and the aggregation of large amounts of measured data have set the stage for new discoveries and insights about the world around us and in us. It seems inevitable that computing will infuse all aspects of science and research and must now become a part of the regular school curriculum along with traditional science and mathematics courses. Indeed, the recent announcement by New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio that all city public schools will be required to offer computer science to all students within ten years underscores this. ACM and its Special Interest Groups are at the center of this nova computatio, and its members have an opportunity to articulate the important role of computing in everyday life. This is an important portfolio, and as responsible computer scientists, programmers and data processing experts, we have an obligation to speak to the benefits and the potential hazards of a world steeped in computing. We are equally obligated to exercise, to our best ability, the mitigation of hazards that our dependence on computing and networking poses.
I, for one, am very enthusiastic about this evolving information universe, recognizing that there are serious challenges to overcome to make it one in which our civilization will thrive.

Tabula Rosa Systems Blog Of 10/13/2015 - Has Malware Jumped Over China's Great Firewall?

Has Malware Jumped Over China's Great Firewall?
OCT 11, 2015 6:00 PM EDT
For years now, China's elaborate efforts to censor and control the Internet -- collectively known as the Great Firewall -- have restricted what the world's  biggest population  of Netizens can see and how fast they can download. Until now, that hasn't been much of a problem for anyone besides locals and companies such as Facebook and Google hoping to sell to them.

In recent weeks, however, Chinese-origin attacks on Apple's iOS and App Store have raised a discomfiting prospect: The closed-off Internet ecosystem China has created may be breeding malware that could affect the rest of us.
This is a different issue than Chinese hacking, which targets companies and governments for their technology and secrets. The most recent attack emerged on Oct. 4, when researchers at Palo Alto Networks revealed that a piece of malware they named YiSpecter was infecting iOS users primarily in China and Taiwan. Its creators had embedded the bad code in a porn video player that allows users to share videos privately using the cloud -- a popular device in China, where censors tend to crack down on publicly available porn sites.
An even more serious case came to light in mid-September, when investigators discovered thatthousands of Chinese-authored apps in Apple's App Store had been infected with malware, including WeChat, the world's second-most popular social media platform, and  Didi Chuxing, China's most popular ride-sharing app. It was the first successful major attack on Apple's store.
Here, too, the Great Firewall had created the perfect environment for the infection to spread. Government filters slow download speeds so dramatically that it can take hours -- days, even -- for Chinese developers to download Apple's authorized toolkit for creating apps and other content for Apple devices. Fed up and impatient, many coders instead chose to use what they thought were Apple software development tools available on Chinese websites, only to discover later that they'd been infected. The malware then injected malicious code into otherwise innocent apps sold in the App Store.
The recent attacks are new only insofar as they've targeted Apple products, which had previously been celebrated for their security. Android's problems in China go back further. Its developer, Google, isn't licensed to offer its Play store in China, so a thriving industry of third-party app stores has blossomed. Their security measures, unsurprisingly, are relatively weak. Between 2012 and 2013, AV-Comparatives, a security software testing organization, found 7,175 infected apps in 20 major third-party app stores, most of which were Chinese.
Foreign companies operating on the mainland have long complained that the Great Firewall has hampered their ability to do business. In February, the European Chamber of Commerce in China issued a survey of 106 of its members, 86 percent of whom said that the inability to access Web sites had had a "negative effect" on their businesses. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce has reported similar complaints.
Now, though, the danger is that bad software and apps created in China will spread outward, undermining the credibility of once-secure services such as Apple's App Store. China stands to lose as much as anyone: Even the prospect of infection could reduce the global appeal of Chinese-designed apps. Virushuo, the online handle for an influential Chinese software and security blogger, has compared the danger to that posed by tainted food. "A good restaurant may not necessarily intend to poison its customers, but they also have a difficult time guaranteeing a reliable supplier of ingredients," he blogged in late September. (The post is now censored in China but available outside the country.)
China's huge population of Internet users offers software developers the advantage of a large-scale test audience before going global. WeChat, perhaps the world's most innovative and (recently) its most copied social networking service, is just one example. But if China wants to fulfill its ambitions of moving up the technological ladder, producing tools and apps with wider appeal, the regime faces a choice. It could remove a few bricks from the Great Firewall in order to create a healthier environment for developers to work. Or it can suffer increasing isolation, as the rest of the world shies away from Web-based products that carry the "made in China" label.

Netiquette IQ Special Blog Post - "Indigenous Peoples' Day" (Not Columbus Day)

Today, most of the United States celebrates Columbus Day. But is it a day worthy of being a holiday? Many, including this author, do not. Below is an alternate post which I will offer instead.Happy Indigenous People's Day!
======================================================

Some Places Are Celebrating A Different Holiday On Columbus Day
Sam Levine Associate Politics Editor, The Huffington Post
·
Posted: 10/09/2015 05:57 PM EDT |
As Americans celebrate Columbus Day on Monday, a number of places are moving to recognize a different holiday.
Seattle and Minneapolis are among the locations that will celebrate "Indigenous Peoples' Day" this year as part of an effort to recognize the marginalization of indigenous groups, who were already here when Christopher Columbus discovered the Americas and were nearly wiped out afterwards. The resolutions, which passed for the first time in both cities last year, will not replace Columbus Day, but rather recognize indigenous communities alongside Columbus.

While the resolutions can't override the federal holiday, they are still an expression of the city's intent to recognize indigenous communities, said Seattle Council member Kshama Sawant.

Advocates say the resolutions produce small but meaningful changes the cities. Minneapolis, for example, is working to change the language on its parking meters to say that holiday parking rules are in effect on Indigenous Peoples' Day instead of Columbus Day.
"I think for most people who know the reality of colonialism, imperialism, the genocide that happened of the indigenous community, for them the idea of celebrating all of that via Columbus Day is quite abhorrent," Sawant said. "It was important to have the city of Seattle declare that they're not going to be celebrating Columbus Day, they're celebrating Indigenous Peoples' Day."
Indigenous Peoples’ Day, Sawant says, is also intended to draw attention to the way that indigenous communities continue to be marginalized and lack access to basic services. More than one in three native children live in poverty, and the high school dropout rate is the highest among any ethnic group in the country.
Columbus Day, the second Monday in October, has been recognized as a federal holiday since 1968. In addition to the places that celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day on Columbus Day, there are at least a dozen states that don't celebrate the holiday at all. South Dakota and Hawaii recognize the day as Native American Day and Discoverers' Day, respectively.
Alondra Cano, a Minneapolis council member who pushed for the resolution there, said that the city's first celebration was a "really emotional day." It was especially important for Native American children "who are going to grow up not having to feel ashamed or feel like something isn't right when people talk about Columbus Day," she said.
Even though Cano was able to get the resolution passed, there were objections along the way. Minneapolis Council President Barbara Johnson objected to the resolution and invoked scalping that her ancestors endured, according to Cano. A representative for the city's labor unions opposed the resolution, Cano said, because she felt it diminished "the impacts of the wonderful things that Christopher Columbus had brought to the Americas."
Seattle Council Member Kshama Sawant says that Indigenous Peoples' Day is intended to highlight the ways that the indigenous community continues to be marginalized.Share on Pinterest
Cano added that some of the persuasion necessary to get the resolution passed involved convincing people that not "everything good and great only happened when Christopher Columbus came."
Martin Nigrelle, president of the Board of Directors at the Italian Community Hall in Seattle, said that the city's Italian community felt that the resolution pitted them against the indigenous communities.
"We support the indigenous peoples having a day of recognition. I think we were offended that we weren't included in the choice process and were offended that it was in some ways pointed at the days we celebrate," he said. "We recognize that Columbus is, should we say, a flawed hero at best in terms of now that we can look at things with a historical perspective, but nonetheless the holiday has come to mean more than just one man for us in terms of its celebration."
"It's not really about whether they have the same day as us or not," he added.
Both Sawant and Cano said that they hope the success of the resolutions in their respective cities encourages more places to pass similar measures. But they also hope the resolutions can have an impact beyond just one day.
"I think that we need a major shift away from the way history is taught in our schools and towards teaching the accurate history," Sawant said. "Teaching this kind of history will empower people of color who come from people of color backgrounds, low income backgrounds to take real pride in their genuine issues."
Correction: An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated Sawant's party. She is a member of the Socialist Alternative party.
