For more than a week, computer systems at Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center in Los Angeles have been offline due to a particularly nasty cyber attack. Malicious software known as ransomware has locked up data throughout the hospital’s IT system — including email, digital scans and certain kinds of medical records.

Local news operations are reporting that the hackers are demanding 9,000 bitcoins — more than $3 million U.S. — to unlock the hospital’s computer system.

30 Years of Cyber Attacks: An Ominous Evolution

Ransomware incidents refers to a type of cyber attack in which sensitive data is remotely targeted and encrypted using standard protocols. When data is locked up in this fashion, it’s virtually impossible to retrieve without key codes held by the hacker. Ransomware criminals typically demand payment via bitcoin, which is harder to trace.

The attack has had an impact on some day-to-day operations at the hospital, forcing staffers to revert to fax machines and handwritten notes. Doctors and staffers are also unable to access certain types of medical records.

The hospital’s CEO has declared a state of “internal emergency” and some patients are being transported to other facilities. One doctor described the situation as “very dangerous” — specifically because care givers can’t access medical records for existing and returning patients.

Virtual Reality Is A National Security Threat

Hospital officials say that the attack appears to be random, and was not specifically targeted at the medical center. There is also no evidence that confidential patient information has been compromised or accessed.

The FBI and the Los Angeles Police Department have launched an investigation. The hospital has also hired computer forensics experts to help determine the source of the cyber attack.

How to write emails if you want people to actually respond

Those messages go out, but sometimes they never get replies.

Having trouble getting replies to your emails? Apparently, one of the best ways to get a reply is to write as if you're 9 years old.

That's according to the makers of the Boomerang mail plug-in, who found that writing at a third-grade reading level seems to be the right level of complexity for the average message, after mining their user data for information on what kind of writing actually gets replies.

Before we all panic about the dumbing down of society, however, it's worth taking an extra moment to think about why you would want to write in a way that a 9-year-old can grasp. Email gets a bad rap these days — in fact, itsdeath has been declared quite a few times — and is often criticized for being inefficient and clunky. Sure enough, looking at more email-writing tips from Boomerang, the key to making your messages better is to keep a focus on simplicity.

To get replies, the company suggests using shorter, simpler sentences — hence the third-grade reading level. Writing this way generally gets a response rate of 53 percent, as opposed to 45 percent for messages written at a high school reading level. Writing too simply also drops your chances of a reply — messages written at a kindergarten reading level get replies only 46 percent of the time. But the worst response rate was for those writing at a college reading level, at 39 percent. Apparently — as many third graders will tell you — no one likes a smarty-pants.

The company also found that being a little more expressive is a good way to get responses. Having an opinion and adding a little emotional tone (positive or negative) gets you better results than being completely neutral.

There's also a sweet spot for how much you should say — get too wordy and people aren't likely to write you back. If you're too terse, you also get a fairly low response rate.

Here's a full list of the tips from the makers of Boomerang:

Use shorter sentences with simpler words. A 3rd grade reading level works best.
Include 1-3 questions in your email.
Make sure you include a subject line! Aim for 3-4 words.
Use a slightly positive or slightly negative tone. Both outperform a completely neutral tone.
Take a stand! Opinionated messages see higher response rates than objective ones.
Write enough, but not too much. Try to keep messages between 50-125 words.

Two thirds of firms ill-equipped to tackle email cyber security threats

Nearly two thirds of businesses are ill-equipped to defend against email-based cyber attacks, according to a new report.

Research by Mimecast showed that 65 per cent of IT professionals are not confident that their organisations can adequately defend against the attacks.

Meanwhile, a third say their email is more vulnerable today than it was five years ago.

Of the two thirds who feel vulnerable, nearly half have experienced such attacks in the past, indicating that they still do not feel any more prepared to tackle email threats.

Education is key to cyber security, but it is being overlooked by some when it comes to these attacks. While 83 per cent of respondents identified email as a common attack vector, one in ten said they do not have any form of email security training in place.

“Our cyber security is under attack and we depend on technology, and email in particular, in all aspects of business,” said Mimecast CEO Peter Bauer.

“So it’s very disconcerting to see that while we might appreciate the danger, many companies are still taking too few measures to defend themselves against email-based threats in particular.

“As the cyber threat becomes more grave, email attacks will only become more common and more damaging. It’s essential that executives, the C-suite in particular, realise that they may not be as safe as they think and take action.

“Our research shows there is work still to be done to be safe and we can learn a lot from the experience of those that have learnt the hard way.”

The survey showed that those who allocate more funding to email security feel more confident that they can fend off the cyber criminals in their inboxes.

Those who felt well-prepared allocated 50 per cent higher budgets to email security compared to the managers who were less confident about their readiness.
