Researching Your Prospective Company to Increase Your Competitive Edge

Without knowledge action is useless and knowledge without action is futile.
—Abu Bakr

Does good Netiquette include researching a company and its associated hiring staff? The answer is a resounding yes! Many, perhaps most, job seekers totally omit any detailed research of a company. It will give you a competitive edge among fellow candidates to research general company information, key employees and relationships; specific keywords relevant to a recruiter, hiring manager, or company; financial data; latest news and key events; and the company’s stock prices. Even if you know a company fairly well, you may not know the major new developments at the organization. Here are some examples of what you might look for about a company:

·         Top accomplishments: Review the company’s major accomplishments in the field and with customers.
·         Company history: In addition to learning about the company’s accomplishments, research the history of the company, particularly paying attention to anything unique that has happened within its past.
·         Stock prices: Look up the company’s current stock prices and for at least one previous year.
·         Executives: At a minimum, know the names of the company’s CEO, COO and your potential managers’ bosses.
·         Competition: In addition to determining your prospective company’s competition in the marketplace, also find out its ranking, which could be a big positive for you if it is positioned correctly.
·         New products: If the products/services produced by the company are part of your possible ROI (return on investment), stress how you can add substantial value to their creation.
·         New expansions or departments: Knowing about a company’s new expansion or departments for which you might be qualified allows you to determine your specific immediate value at the company.
·         Buzzwords: Check the company’s website and view the buzzwords in product descriptions, press releases and white papers. Include these buzzwords and respond to them when you are writing to an employee of the company.
·         Popular products: The same advice applies as for “New products.”
·         Specific departments and responsibilities[JW1] : Research the specific areas you will be associated with.Any additional departments you might fit into: Oftentimes, there is more than one department or position for which you might be qualified. It is best to know about these when sending your first letter or making the initial call.

To restate, it is important to mention in the introductory or supplementary email how you can add immediate value to any new dynamic of a company. This can include describing your experience in dealing with a new type of product, successes in the types of initiatives a company is planning, or the skills you possess that can assist with the organization’s competition. These are the key points. Any or all of them can provide you with that extra edge! Without taking the time to do the research, as the quotation says, your efforts will be less distinguishable!
