Tabula Rosa Blog Of 5/16/15 - The Hague Declaration on Knowledge Discovery

 ============================================
There are, many organizations on the Internet which are vying for power, for content control for Infrastructure design and many other significant aspects.
One of the most relevant of these is the Hague, best known for their trials of war criminals. This blog has long maintained the vital necessity of an international open, free and accessible Internet. Enjoy the article below.

Over 50 organisations have signed The Hague Declaration on Knowledge Discovery in the Digital Age (www.thehaguedeclaration.com), which calls for immediate changes to intellectual property (IP) law and the removal of other barriers preventing widened and more equal access to data.
Improved treatments for diseases, answers to global issues such as climate change and billions in government savings are among the potential benefits to be gained, if the principles outlined in the Declaration are adopted by governments, businesses and society.
The Declaration asserts that copyright was never designed to regulate the sharing of facts, data and ideas ‒ nor should it. The right to receive and impart information and ideas is guaranteed by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights[1] but the modern application of IP law often limits this right, even when these most simple building blocks of knowledge are used.
“The rapidly changing digital environment, increased computing power and the sheer quantity of data being produced makes it essential for researchers and society to be able to use modern techniques and tools to help them make new discoveries. Research practices could be revolutionised and lives could literally be saved, if we can achieve better access to the knowledge contained within Big Data,” said Kristiina Hormia-Poutanen, President of LIBER (www.libereurope.eu), the Association of European Research Libraries, which has led work to develop the Declaration.
A new approach to knowledge discovery is critical at a time when society is facing a literal data deluge. The digital universe, or the data we create and copy annually, is doubling in size every two years and is expected to reach 44 trillion gigabytes by 2020[2].
In addition to clarity around the scope of IP law, a skills gap and a lack of infrastructure must also be addressed if computers are to be better employed to extract and recombine data in order to identify patterns and trends. This process, known as Content Mining, is widely recognised as the only way to deal effectively with Big Data.
“Given the need to make sense of the ever-expanding literature and derive new insights, the Wellcome Trust strongly supports the right of researchers to mine content to which they already have lawful access. The Hague Declaration is an important step in demonstrating the common vision that knowledge discovery and reuse should not be constrained by existing legal frameworks and uncertainty.  In particular, we are advocating for reform of copyright law at European level to permit data and text mining for all uses, both commercial and non-commercial,” said Will Greenacre, Policy Officer at The Wellcome Trust (www.wellcome.ac.uk).
Organisations and individuals who wish to support the Declaration can add their signature on the official website,www.thehaguedeclaration.com. In so doing, they will officially recognise the huge potential for knowledge discovery whilst also acknowledging that steps need to be taken to ensure that everyone can benefit from this potential. Tabula Rosa Systems Blog Of 5/15/15 - Wetware: The Major Data Security Threat You've Never Heard Of

 ============================================
 we losing the war on cyber criminals. One of the newer reasons is "wetware" as noted in the article below.
============================================
 Wetware: The Major Data Security Threat You've Never Heard Of

Posted: 05/14/2015 7:06 am EDT Updated: 05/14/2015 9:59 am EDT

For the first time, according to a recent study, criminal and state-sponsored hacks have surpassed human error as the leading cause of health care data breaches, and it could be costing the industry as much as $6 billion. With an average organization cost of $2.1 million per breach, the results of the study give rise to a question: How do you define human error?
More than half of the respondents in the Ponemon Institute's Fifth Annual Benchmark Study on Privacy & Security of Healthcare Data, said their organization's incident response team was underfunded or understaffed and roughly one third of respondents had no incident response plan in place at all--zip, nada, zilch--a fact that beggars the imagination at a moment when breaches have become the third certainty in life, and one that highlights the seeming no-show of the "first do no harm" approach to patients on the data breach-prone operations side of the health care industry.
While it is disconcerting that there isn't a more robust incident response culture out there, perhaps more worrisome is the seeming lack of best practices pointed at heading off the problem before it happens. That's where a new term comes into play.
Wetware is a term of art used by hackers to describe a non-firmware, hardware or software approach to getting the information they want to pilfer. In other words, people. (The human body is more than 60 percent water.) Wetware intrusions happen when a hacker exploits employee trust, predictable behavior or the failure to follow security protocols. It can be a spearphishing email, a crooked employee on the take or a file found while Dumpster diving -- and, of course, all stripe of things in between. Whatever it is, there's a human being involved.
The findings of the Ponemon Institute study point to the dire need for better wetware precautions when it comes to the security of health care records. Consider that 40 percent of the health organizations in the study reported more than five breaches in the past two years.
According to the study, since 2010 "the percentage of respondents who said their organization had multiple breaches increased from 60% to 79%." Also by no means inconsequential is the fact that medical identity theft -- where an imposter uses a victim's credentials to obtain health care--nearly doubled in the past five years, from 1.4 million adult victims to more than 2.3 million in 2014.
The breaches comprising these figures were not all the size or severity of Anthem or Premera, which combined leaked extremely sensitive personally identifiable information like Social Security numbers, birth dates and bank account numbers belonging to more than 91 million consumers. While the $2.1 million average cost to health care organizations is eye-catching, it involved incidents with an average of 2,700 lost or stolen records, a figure that runs the gamut from Anthem and Premera to breaches that were decidedly on the smaller side.
As Larry Ponemon rightly pointed out in an interview with Dark Reading, while many of the incidents involved the exposure of "less than 100 records," that in no way trivializes those events. According to the study, "Many medical identity theft victims report they have spent an average of $13,500 to restore their credit, reimburse their health care provider for fraudulent claims and correct inaccuracies in their health records."
With 91 percent of the health care companies who responded to the study's questions reporting at least one incident in the preceding two years, it's clear that whatever we're doing to address the health care breach problem is woefully inadequate. What's more, it is clear that the problem is wetware. Better practices need to become part of the work culture in the health care industry.
When participating organizations in the study were asked what worried them the most (with three responses permitted), 70 percent said the biggest concern was a negligent or careless employee. That figure was followed by 40 percent of respondents who thought cyber attackers were the bigger worry and 33 percent who were worried about the security of public cloud servers. Respondents also cited insecure mobile apps (13 percent) and insecure medical devices (6 percent).
With 96 percent of respondents saying that they had a security incident involving lost or stolen devices, the fact that cyber attacks -- state-backed and criminal -- are the leading cause of breaches should keep you up at night, but the more terrifying take-away here is that doubtless many of those attacks wouldn't be possible were it not for the human factor. There is plenty of overlap between the proactive criminal and the clumsy employee to make these figures start to seem like so much digital rain in a lost scene from "The Matrix."
These days, smartphones and tablets are on the most-compromised or stolen list. Earlier on in the data breach pandemic, laptop computers and desktops were at the top of that list. While it is interesting on some level how the information gets compromised, at the end of the day, a breach is a breach is a breach. Health care industry: you're all wet.
The bottom line here is that hackers of all stripe are having a field day because the wetware problem has been largely unaddressed, and until people become the alpha and omega of the process that leads to a zero tolerance solution, data breaches will continue apace.

Tabula Rosa Technical Term Of The Day - Application Delivery Controller

  ======================================================

From whatis.com 5/15/15

Application Delivery Controller
An application delivery controller (ADC) is a network device that manages client connections to complex Web and enterprise applications. In general, a controller is a hardware device or a software program that manages or directs the flow of data between two entities. An ADC essentially functions as a load balancer, optimizing end-user performance, reliability, data center resource use and security for enterprise applications.
An ADC can accelerate the performance of applications delivered over the wide area network (WAN) by implementing optimization techniques such as application classification, compression and reverse caching. Typically, ADCs controllers are strategically placed behind a firewall and in front of one or more application servers to be a single point of control that can determine the security needs of an application and provide simplified Authentication, Authorization and Accounting (AAA).
Virtual application delivery controllers are particularly useful in large enterprise data centers and cloud computing environments where customers need to be able to scale capacity up and down as application demand fluctuates. Many ADC vendors are working with cloud providers to deliver cloud load balancers for application acceleration, availability assurance and rapid scalability.

Tabula Rosa Systems and Building the Green Internet

============================================
For the past few months since I began this blog, some of its content has evolved from strictly an email blog into one that has been involved with Net Neutrality, demographic equality and the criticality of the Internet (and Netiquette) for so many people throughout the world. This also involves the selection of products which are "Internet friendly".

The article below will be the beginning of many more regarding the importance of the Net to the environment!
============================================

Executive Director, Greenpeace USA

Building the Green Internet: A Joint Venture for Tech Companies and Activists
I've been looking into the environmental impact of our electronic gadgets for years, and if there's one thing I learned from producing The Story of Electronics, it's that companies have an invaluable role to play in making sure our digital lives make a positive contribution to both people and the planet.
We saw an incredible example of tech companies turned activists earlier this year. The open Internet -- an Internet where every person gets to express their voice, no matter how much money they have -- came under major threat when monopoly cable companies like AT&T and Comcast tried to gut net-neutrality rules.
Four million Americans (including tens of thousands of Greenpeace supporters) raised their voices and told the government to protect net neutrality, and government regulators listened, ruling against the cable companies in February in a major win for grassroots democracy. Part of the reason they succeeded is that many of the biggest Internet companies in the world, like Netflix, Amazon and Microsoft, added the power of their voices to the campaign.
Since they already won this battle, you may wonder why I'm writing this. Well, the Internet needs a lot of electricity, and its footprint is only growing as more people around the world get connected. If coal, gas and nuclear power fuels all of that digital growth, it will lock the world's new digital economy into the polluting energy of yesterday. If, on the other hand, the Internet is powered by renewable energy, then it can help usher in the clean-energy revolution we so desperately need to avoid catastrophic climate change. This is a major opportunity, and responsibility, for Internet companies to join activists in a crucial fight: making the Internet green.
Unfortunately, just as monopoly cable companies like AT&T and Comcast tried to hold us back from an open Internet, monopoly electric companies that are dependent on dirty energy want to hold us back from a green Internet. The data centers that power the Internet are concentrated in a few locations around the world, like North Carolina and Virginia, so much so that up to 70 percent of global Internet traffic passes through Northern Virginia every day.
These are the places where the Internet "cloud" touches the ground; they are predominantly powered by coal, gas and nuclear power, and the utilities that make and sell the electricity there are monopolies like Duke Energy in North Carolina and Dominion Power in Virginia. These companies have fought tooth and nail against opening the market up to wind and solar power.
The very same Internet companies that joined grassroots activists to protect net neutrality are perfectly positioned to join them again to push for more clean energy -- and, in fact, they must do so if they want to make good on promises they've made. Amazon, Apple, Box, Facebook, Google, Rackspace, Salesforce, and Equinix (a major provider of Internet data centers) all are committed to powering their corners of the Internet with 100-percent renewable energy. But all of them have operations in places like North Carolina and Virginia, so they'll never be able to get to 100-percent renewable energy as long as utilities like Duke and Dominion stand in the way.
One example: In 2014 alone, Amazon Web Services, the giant cloud-computing subsidiary of Amazon.com, needed as much electricity to power its data-center growth in Virginia as it would take to power 160,000 U.S. homes, according to Greenpeace's analysis. With Amazon's massive footprint there being powered almost entirely by coal, gas and nuclear energy from Dominion's power plants, Amazon will have to demand more wind and solar from Dominion and Virginia policy makers if it wants to make good on its 100-percent-renewable pledge.
Some companies have already done exactly this: Apple pushed its utility in Arizona to provide it with solar energy, and Facebook did the same thing in Iowa for wind energy. But these examples have been too few and far between.
The net-neutrality victory this year showed us Internet companies joining with millions of Americans in the fight to prevent Internet "slow lanes" and keep the Web open and free for everyone. Now they have the opportunity and obligation to join activists in the fight to avoid Internet "dirty lanes," so that we can have an Internet that is free, open and green.

Tabula Rosa Blog For 5/13/2015 How Email Templates Help Sales Teams

I have continuously advocated in this blog, my published book on Netiquette and my soon to be released book, that good Netiquette = More email opens, reads and responses. The article below also reflects this theory.

Good Netiquette to all!

 ==============================================

How Email Templates Help Sales Teams Mind Their Ps and Qs
business2community.com MAY 4, 2015  Jennifer Dignum
I read some research recently that said nearly 80% of people decide to engage or not engage with people based on their email etiquette! Even bigger was the finding that 88% of us spend time rewriting emails to sound more intelligent. The research went on to highlight a few other email issues – such as millennials wanting to sound more educated and an overall preference for short emails.
Think of your own sales organization for a moment. How often do your reps send out emails on a daily basis? For most sales reps, it can be between 30-40 emails a day.
These emails can represent the first impression a prospect has of your business and – if you consider the above research findings – can be a make or break opportunity. Additionally, if 90% of your sales reps are spending time to rewrite all of their emails, it can also take up a huge amount of time – time that could be spent better engaging with more prospects!
With email templates and automated sequencing, sales leaders can remove the biggest concerns they have around emails, such as whether their sales reps are:
  • Spending too much time writing emails?
  • Making typos or grammatical errors in prospect emails?
  • Sending emails that aren’t effective?
  • Sending too many emails too frequently?
Email templates increase a rep’s productivity
With email templates specifically created for different stages of the purchasing cycle and customized for different types of customers, sales reps can save considerable time in their day – and still retain the ability to personalize their communications. Email templates give them that control combined with a powerful, time-saving baseline for email interactions.
Email templates can eliminate typos and grammatical errors
You can’t always prevent typos, but email templates give you the very best chance possible. With an email template, you can ensure that the bulk of copy is clearly and concisely written and contains no grammatical errors, and still giving reps some latitude for personalization.
Email templates can improve success rate
By combining email templates with analytics, organizations can see which emails deliver the best performance. This insight allows you to quickly identify the emails that engage prospects the most – and get rid of the ones that don’t! Using templates that have been proven to successfully engage prospects, your sales reps can be confident about the email content based on its past history of success – and not waste time re-writing routine email correspondence.
Sequencing of email templates
Going a step further, email sequencing can deliver the biggest return by automating a series of emails based on a particular prospect’s response or where a prospect is in the buying cycle. For example, if you send a group of emails, and half of the recipients open them, you can choose to send a specific email for the recipients who opened the email and a different one for those who didn’t – and maybe the latter a few days later. With analytics showing the approach that works best, sales leaders can outline a clear path for sales reps to follow in their email communications with prospects.
You never get a second chance to make a first impression. With inside sales rapidly outpacing field sales, emails have become a de facto form of prospect and customer communication. Make it easy for your sales team to mind their email Ps and Qs and keep the focus on core selling activities with automated email templates and sequencing.
