Tabula Rosa Systems Blog For 10/10/2015 Port Mirroring

 port mirroring
Port mirroring is an approach to monitoring network traffic that involves forwarding a copy of each packet from one network switch port to another.
Port mirroring enables the administrator to keep close track of switch performance by placing a protocol analyzer on the port that's receiving the mirrored data. The analyzer captures and evaluates the data without affecting the client on the original port.
A network administrator can use port mirroring as a diagnostic or debugging tool. It can be especially useful when fending off an attack.

Tabula Rosa Systems Blog Of 10/9/2015 - Understanding Delays In Email Responses

Waiting on an email? Why it takes some people SO long to respond
Oct. 8, 2015 at 4:32 PM
Meghan Holohan
TODAY
It could simply be a generational difference. A recent study finds that email response time varies greatly by age and the older a person is, the fewer emails she will answer.
"Different people are able to cope with information load, email load [differently]," says Kristina Lerman, a project leader at the Information Science Institute at the USC Viterbi School of Engineering and an author of the study. "We do have evidence that people have finite capacity to process information."
The researchers looked at 16 billion emails exchanged by two million users over several months to see how long people took to reply and the length of response. The study finds:
If people are going to respond to an email, 90 percent will do it within a few days.
·         Half fire off a response in under an hour.
·         Teens reply the fastest, shooting back a response in 13 minutes, on average.
·         People aged 20-35 are almost as speedy, sending a reply in 16 minutes, on average.
·         It takes people, ages 35-50, about 24 minutes to reply.
·         People age 51 and older take a whopping 47 minutes to reply to their emails, on average.
·         Women take about four minutes longer than men to send a reply.
·         The most common responses contain five words.
·         More than half of the responses contain fewer than 43 words.
·         Only 30 percent of emails exceed 100 words.
·         Responses on the weekends are the shortest.
·         Want a lengthy reply? Make sure your email arrives in the morning.
Younger people respond to the most emails, but with the fewest words. Older people respond to the same number of emails no matter how many they receive. If they respond to 50 on a day when they receive 50, they'll respond to 50 on a day when they receive 200, says Lerman.
Why don't they answer?
The problem with email lags? Waiting for a response feels torturous.

It's because we're social and view email as a way to connect.
"We expect someone to acknowledge us," says Pamela Rutledge, direct of the Media Psychology Research Center, who was not involved in the study. "There's a lot of social anxiety that comes along with [no email responses] because no one wants to be disrespected or no one wants to be ignored."

Rutledge says that the study points out patterns, but does not explain why a difference exists between older and younger users. She cautions people from reading the results as negative. It's not bad that younger users send short responses, just like it isn't negative that older users send lengthy responses.
"Understand in this new world short [or long] does not have an implicit value judgment," she says. "There is a misunderstanding that technology gets in the way of relationships. I think that it facilitates it."

Tabula Rosa Systems Blog Of 10'8/2015 - Memory Ballooning

Memory ballooning
Memory ballooning is a memory management technique that allows a physical host to take advantage of unused memory on its guest virtual machines (VMs).
When a host OS is short on physical memory, the hypervisor polls balloon drivers installed on the guests to request available memory. The guests respond by using page-reclaiming algorithms to determine which pages are available and can be assigned to the balloon drivers. The process of assigning available pages to the driver is known as inflating the balloon. Releasing available pages is known as deflating the balloon.
In a positive sense, memory ballooning allows that the total amount of RAM required by guest virtual machines to exceed the amount of physically available RAM on the host. A problem can occur, however, when a balloon driver inflates to the point where the guest VM no longer has the memory it needs to run processes within the guest. In such a scenario, the guest operating system will start swapping things out to deal with its memory issues. This swap activity can negatively affect performance, depending upon the amount of memory to recoup and/or the quality of the storage IOPS delivered to the VM.
Other memory-reclaiming techniques include memory overcommit, memory paging, memory mirroring and transparent page sharing.

Tabula Rosa Systems Blog Of 10/7/2015 - Can Solar-Powered, Internet-Beaming Drones Solve the Broadband Access Dilemma?

Can Solar-Powered, Internet-Beaming Drones Solve the Broadband Access Dilemma?
A well-known tech company plans to use a skydiving property to develop drones that can beam Internet service to communities that currently go without.
BY KEN SCHACHTER, NEWSDAY / OCTOBER 6, 20150
A widely known dot-com company plans to use the newly acquired property of a skydiving company in Calverton, N.Y., to develop high-altitude solar-powered drones that can beam Internet service, the property's former owner said Monday.
Raymond F. Maynard, who sold a hangar and the 16.3-acre property of Skydive Long Island, said Calverton was chosen because the buyer was seeking a limited-use airport.
Maynard said that Brooklyn-based Luminati Aerospace LLC, which acquired the property, is backed by a widely known company that plans to build the drones, flying at 90,000 feet, to beam Internet service to communities that lack service. Luminati incorporated in New York in July, according to government documents.
Maynard said that a nondisclosure agreement barred him from identifying the company funding Luminati. "[But] you already know their name," he said.
Maynard said that he was first approached to sell the property in January and that his health issues helped seal the deal as negotiations continued.
"I've owned the business for 29 years," he said. "I've had a fabulous career. . . . It was a great run."
Efforts to reach Luminati, which is scheduled to make a presentation at a Town of Riverhead meeting Thursday, were unsuccessful.
Google has been researching the feasibility of transmitting Internet service from balloons.
And Facebook has been working to develop a fleet of solar-powered drones that could beam data to the ground. In a post on the social network Monday, chief executive Mark Zuckerberg said Facebook also is working with French satellite company Eutelsat Communications SA to launch a satellite in 2016 to transmit Internet service to sub-Saharan Africa.
"Over the last year Facebook has been exploring ways to use aircraft and satellites to beam Internet access down into communities from the sky," he said. "I'm excited to announce our first project to deliver Internet from space. . We're going to keep working to connect the entire world -- even if that means looking beyond our planet."
