BOOK REVIEW
A revealing primer on the art of effective emails and other communications.
Babicki, in his debut self-help guide, covers the many peculiarities of computerized messaging: How to shape aneye-catching subject line; how to troubleshoot error messages from a returned email; what the file-extension suffixes on attachments mean; what the email time stamp tells others about your personality (night owl vs. early riser); and how to craft a corporate email security policy. His advice on these sometimes-arcane topics is precise—“RTF format should only be used when it is certain that the recipient uses Outlook”—while also remaining intelligible to laypeople. The author also instructs readers on time-honored principles of proper English and clear expression. He delves with detailed lucidity into rules of grammar, punctuation and usage; prescribes the proper formatting of numbers and dates; and inveighs against the dangling participle. He also explores the tonal shadings of different kinds of salutations, crusades for concise and gracious style, warns against the gassy redundancy of such wordings as “final outcome” and “at an early time,” and appends a blacklist of “the most irritating phrases,” from “out of the box” to “team player.” Good writing
grows from good thinking, so he instructs readers on the pitfalls of logical fallacies, from the ad hominem attack to the begged question, and on the distinctions between assumption, presumption and inference. Furthermore, since communication is the cornerstone of civilized life, he limns its legal and moral underpinnings in copyright and plagiarism strictures, codes of courteous Internet deportment and techniques for pacifying flame wars. (He recommends a “Zen” approach, for example, in replying to angry missives.) The result is a mashup of Strunk and White, Miss Manners, Aristotle and Microsoft Help, all laid out in a well-organized, very readable text sprinkled with amusing examples and phrased in the tart, aphoristic style of an exacting schoolmaster (“The better it sounds, the more it is trusted”). Overall, Babicki’s technical expertise and literary aplomb make this a fine manual for the everyday scribe.A comprehensive, stimulating guide to getting the word out.

Tabula Rosa Systems Blog For 1/10/2019 - Chatbot, What Is It?

====================================================

Chatbot
A chatbot (sometimes referred to as a chatterbot) is programming that simulates the conversation or "chatter" of a human being through text or voice interactions. Chatbot virtual assistants are increasingly being used to handle simple, look-up tasks in both business-to-customer (B2C) and business-to-business (B2B) environments. The addition of chatbot assistants not only reduces overhead costs by making better use of support staff time, but it also allows companies to provide a level of customer service during hours when live agents aren't available.
Chatbots can have varying levels of complexity and can be stateless or stateful. A stateless chatbot approaches each conversation as if it was interacting with a new user. In contrast, a stateful chatbot is able to review past interactions and frame new responses in context. Adding a chatbot to a company's service or sales department requires little coding; today, a number of chatbot service providers that allow developers to build conversational interfaces for third-party business applications.

Perhaps the most important aspect of implementing a chatbot is selecting the right natural language processing (NLP) engine. If the user interacts with the bot through voice, for example, then the chatbot requires a speech recognition engine. Business owners also have to decide whether they want structured or unstructured conversations. Chatbots built for structured conversations are highly scripted, which simplifies programming but restricts the kinds of things that the users can ask.

In business-to-business (B2B) environments, chatbots are commonly scripted and used to respond to frequently asked questions or perform simple, repetitive calls to action. In sales, for example, a chatbot may be a quick way for sales reps to get phone numbers. Chatbots can also be used in service departments, assisting service agents in answering repetitive requests. For example, a service rep might provide the chatbot with an order number and ask when the order was shipped. Generally, once a conversation gets too complex for a chatbot, the call or text window will be transferred to a human service agent.

Tabula Rosa Blog Of 1/9/2019 - Definition Of Amazon Connect

====================================================

Amazon Connect
Amazon Connect is an Amazon Web Services (AWS) public cloud customer contact center service. Amazon Connect enables customer service representatives to respond to phone calls or chat inquiries from end customers just as if the contact center infrastructure was set up and managed on premises. Amazon Connect instances can be created across multiple availability zones and establish multiple paths to telecom providers for fault tolerance and high availability.
According to Amazon, the service can scale to accommodate tens of thousands of call center agents. AWS provides a telecommunication infrastructure for each company that uses the service. To access the service, users are required to have an Amazon Connect account or an AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM) account.
How Amazon Connect works
The customer who requested the service becomes the administrator for Amazon Connect. The admin's first task is to claim a phone number and configure permissions for users, which include operators, contact center managers and agents.
To deploy the service, the admin must first create an Amazon Connect cloud instance. To do this, the customer logs into their AWS Management Console and completes several tasks. First, the AWS customer must create or select a user directory, which can include an outside option, such as Microsoft Active Directory. Next, the customer creates a user with administrator privileges and then selects telephony options ( such as whether the contact center needs to place calls, receive calls or both) and the location for data storage.

Amazon Connect: Contact Flows

A Contact Flow defines each step a customer can make when they interact with the contact center. The logic is similar to that of an automated Interactive Voice Response (IRV) system and determines an end user's experience. An admin can configure a Contact Flow through a graphical user interface (GUI) in the console to play a recorded prompt, ask a caller a question, manage call recording settings or transfer a call.

A Contact Flow also supports text to speech with Amazon Polly and allows developers to customize pronunciation, speech rate and volume with Simple Speech Markup Language. In addition, Amazon Connect can route end user calls according to agent skills, availability and caller priority. The service assigns agents a routing profile to fit agent expertise to one or more call queues.
Connect also provides a Contact Flow Logs feature, which allows a business to track and streamline its interactions with end customers via the contact center. Amazon CloudWatch stores these logs in the same region as the Connect instance.
Additionally, the Connect service provides nearly 100 metrics -- both in historical and real-time reports -- to help monitor contact center performance. An admin can export these reports to Simple Storage Service buckets, where they will be encrypted.
Software, hardware support
Amazon Connect requires the open source WebRTC, and supports a number of web browsers, including Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox.
Amazon Connect enables voice interactions via a public switched telephone network provided by AMCS LLC. The service supports dual-tone multi-frequency signals, text-to-speech conversion via Amazon Polly and natural language interactions via Amazon Lex. Contact center agents use either a web-based softphone or traditional phone to interact with end users and a Contact Control Panel to manage these interactions.
In addition to its interactions with Amazon cloud services, Amazon Connect integrates with third-party customer relationship management, workforce management and analytics tools.
Languages and costs
Amazon Connect provides call center support for English, Spanish, French, Brazilian Portuguese, Korean, German, Simplified Chinese and Japanese.
Connect is a pay-as-you-go service. After a user exhausts its free tier of service, AWS charges for Connect use by the minute, plus daily telecom charges.

Tabula Rosa Systems Blog Of 1/8/2019 - A 5G Overview

From whatis.com

5G
Fifth-generation wireless (5G) is the latest iteration of cellular technology, engineered to greatly increase the speed and responsiveness of wireless networks. With 5G, data transmitted over wireless broadband connections could travel at rates as high as 20 Gbps by some estimates -- exceeding wireline network speeds -- as well as offer latency of 1 ms or lower for uses that require real-time feedback. 5G will also enable a sharp increase in the amount of data transmitted over wireless systems due to more available bandwidth and advanced antenna technology.

In addition to improvements in speed, capacity and latency, 5G offers network management features, among them network slicing, which allows mobile operators to create multiple virtual networks within a single physical 5G network. This capability will enable wireless network connections to support specific uses or business cases and could be sold on an as-a-service basis. A self-driving car, for example, would require a network slice that offers extremely fast, low-latency connections so a vehicle could navigate in real time. A home appliance, however, could be connected via a lower-power, slower connection because high performance isn't crucial. The internet of things (IoT) could use secure, data-only connections.

5G networks and services will be deployed in stages over the next several years to accommodate the increasing reliance on mobile and internet-enabled devices. Overall, 5G is expected to generate a variety of new applications, uses and business cases as the technology is rolled out.
