As an author of electronic Netiquette, I have written in my books (see below) and this blog about the use of cliches, stale phrases and words which will compromise a communication, sometimes with dramatic effects.

Here is a nice list that follows.

The corporate world can be an impenetrable place even without the code words that those on the inside abuse with abandon.
A new survey of 2,000 business travelers has revealed the 10 most hated items of "management speak", the jargon that invades board rooms, marketing meetings and professional emails.
To "touch base offline" topped the list, angering those who preferred to say "let's meet and talk", according to Jargon Buster, a new book curated by language expert Adam Jacot de Boinod for Amba Hotels.
"Blue sky thinking", meaning creative ideas that are not constrained by preconceptions – similar to "thinking outside the box", which ranked fifth on the list – and "to punch a puppy" rounded out the top three.
The canine catchphrase, which means to do something unpleasant that is good for the business, was more offensive to women than to men, irritating 29pc and 20pc of respondents respectively.
“It was fascinating to see the emotional response that business travelers have to certain terms or phrases," said Goldsmiths University behavioral expert Patrick Fagan.
"While some feel repelled by certain words, and attracted to others, the majority of business travelers feel that many of the buzzwords have no concrete or effective meaning."
The 10 most hated jargon phrases
1.    Touch base offline (let’s meet and talk)
2.    Blue sky thinking (creative ideas free from practical constraints)
3.    Punch a puppy (do something detestable but good for the business)
4.    Thought shower (to come up with several ideas)
5.    Thinking outside the box (thinking creatively and innovatively)
6.    It’s on my radar (I’m aware of it)
7.    Close of play (the end of the day)
8.    Singing from the same hymn sheet (all in agreement)
9.    Peel the onion (to examine a problem in detail)
10.  To wash its own face (to justify or pay for itself)
Other repeat offenders not included in Jargon Buster's top 10 include "to circle back", to "action" something and to "reach out".
Research by the Institute of Leadership and Management has found that a quarter of British workers find corporate jargon to be a “pointless irritation”.
The majority of business travelers feel that many of the buzzwords have no concrete or effective meaning
Chrissie Mahler, founder of the Plain English Campaign, has called management speak  "downright dangerous" and criticized it of "acting as a barrier to procuring new business".
Last year, the Financial Conduct Authority warned firms in the City to avoid small print packed with complicated technical language, which can confuse clients and lead to unnecessary complaints.
"Corporate jargon needs refreshing and we are on a mission to shake up the standard business language that so many of us come across in our everyday lives," said Colin Roy, chief marketing officer at GLH Hotels, the London-based subsidiary of GuocoLeisure Group that owns Amba H

Tabula Rosa Systems Blog Of 1/6/16 - Two-factor authentication (2FA)

====================================================

Two-factor authentication (2FA)
from whatis.com Two-factor authentication (2FA) is a security process in which the user provides two authentication factors to verify they are who they say they are. 2FA can be contrasted with single-factor authentication (SFA), a security process in which the user provides only one factor -- typically a password.

Two-factor authentication products can be divided into two parts: tokens that are given to users to use when logging in, and infrastructure or software that recognizes and authenticates access for users who are using their tokens correctly. The authentication tokens may be physical devices, such as key fobs or smart cards, or they may exist in software as mobile or desktop apps that generate PIN codes for authentication.

Two-factor authentication has long been used to control access to sensitive systems and data, and online services are increasingly introducing 2FA to prevent their users' data from being accessed by hackers who have stolen a password database or used phishing campaigns to obtain users' passwords. The additional layer of security makes it harder for attackers to gain access to a person's devices and online accounts, because knowing the victim's password alone is not enough to pass the authentication check.

Tabula Rosa Systems Blog Of 1/5/17 - Ransomware took in $1 billion in 2016--improved defenses may not be enough to stem the tide

Ransomware took in $1 billion in 2016--improved defenses may not be enough to stem the tide
According to a security expert who requested anonymity, ransomware cybercriminals took in about $1 billion last year
Increased user awareness of phishing threats, better antivirus technology, more industry-wide information sharing and cross-border efforts by law enforcement authorities will combine to turn the tide against ransomware this year, according to some security experts, but others expect the attacks to continue to increase.
According to a security expert who requested anonymity, ransomware cybercriminals took in about $1 billion last year, based on money coming into ransomware-related Bitcoin wallets.
That includes more than $50 million each for three wallets associated with the Locky ransomware, and a fourth one that processed close to $70 million. Cryptowall brought in close to $100 million before it was shut down this year. CryptXXX gathered in $73 million during the second half of 2016, and Cerber took in $54 million, the expert said.
Smaller ransomware families brought in another $150 million, and the FBI has reported $209 million in ransomware payments during the first three months of 2016. In addition to this $800 million or so in known payments, there are many other Bitcoin wallets that are unknown to researchers and uncounted, pushing the estimated total to $1 billion for all of 2016.
"The $1 billion number isn't at all unreasonable and might even be low," confirmed Mark Nunnikhoven, vice president of cloud research at Trend Micro.
"It's getting difficult to track the amount of money flowing into criminals' Bitcoin wallets because they've started to try and hide the transactions across a large number of wallets," he added.
He said that there was a 400 percent increase in ransomware variants last year, and he expects to see a 25 percent growth in ransomware families in 2016.
"What we're seeing is a bit of a maturation in how to execute these attacks, so we're expecting a leveling off to a more realistic growth curve," he said.
But criminals will continue innovating because of how profitable ransomware is.
"I don't think we'll see the 100 percent growth that we saw from 2015 to 2016," said Allan Liska, intelligence analyst at Recorded Future. "I think we'll probably see a 50 percent growth."
The markets for stolen medical records, credit card numbers and email addresses are collapsing, he said.
"Not only is it taking a while to get paid, but they're not getting paid as much as they used to," he said.
Meanwhile, ransomware is an easy business to get into, the payout is immediate, and it offers an ongoing revenue stream.
"There's no incentive for them to discontinue ransomware," he said.
Some experts expect growth to be even higher.
Successful ransomware attacks will double this year, predicted Tom Bain, vice president at CounterTack.
"The reality is that every single customer I speak to, anyone in the industry really, this is their number one concern," he said.
Better defensive technology and collaboration will help, he said, but the problem is going to get worse before it starts to get better.
Gartner analysts estimate that there were between 2 million and 3 million successful ransomware attacks in 2016, and that the frequency will double year over year through 2019.
"I think they're right," said Bain.
But not all experts think the future is quite that bleak.
Raj Samani, vice president and CTO at Intel Security, predicts that anti-ransomware efforts will begin to pay off in the next few months.
"We'll see a spike earlier on this year, but then I anticipate our efforts with law enforcement to be successful," he said.
Intel, along with Kaspersky Labs, Europol, and the Dutch National High Tech Crime Unit formed an alliance this past summer, No More Ransom. Since then, more than a dozen other law enforcement agencies have joined up, including Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Colombia, France, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. Several other security vendors have also joined up.
"Now that we've got more law enforcement agencies on board, and more private sector firms, we expect to see an increase in successful take-down operations," said Samani.
In addition to working together to bring down ransomware operations, the group also distributes free anti-ransomware tools.
That, combined with more user awareness about phishing and better detection technologies, will combine to stop the growth of this attack vector, Samani said.
"As an industry, we've started to develop new products, sandboxing, threat intelligence exchanges," he said. "It is getting better."
However, he warned that malware authors do have one significant advantage.
"There's an asymmetry of information," he said. "They have tools and services that will allow them to run their malware through all the anti-virus engines out there. They can install our products and they know how our products work because we openly talk about them. This is one of the big security challenges."
This story, "Ransomware took in $1 billion in 2016--improved defenses may not be enough to stem the tide" was originally published by CSO.

Tabula Rosa Systems Definition Of The Day - Key Performance Indicator (KPI)

key performance indicator (KPI)
A key performance indicator (KPI) is a business metric for evaluating factors that are crucial to the success of an organization. The purpose of using KPIs is to focus attention on the tasks and processes that management has determined are most important for making progress towards declared goals and targets.
KPIs differ per organization. For example, a KPI for a public company may be its stock price while a KPI in government might be a low unemployment rate. KPIs will also differ for roles people play in the same organization. For example, a Chief Executive Officer (CEO) might consider profitability as the most important KPI, while a sales team manager in the same company might consider successful service level agreement (SLA) delivery numbers as the most important KPI.
Because KPIs often gauge abstract targets such as user experience or job ticket turnaround effectiveness, identifying useful KPIs can be challenging. The selection of appropriate KPIs depends, in part, on the organization's ability to actually measure the indicators. Typically a management team will gather requirements and analyze correlations between metrics, but in the end, they must put the KPIs in practice and observe what behaviors the KPIs encourage.
Once KPIs have been determined, management must continually refine the indicators to ensure they reinforce each other and do not cause conflicting priorities. In addition to being quantifiable, all KPIs should be well-defined and communicated clearly. Each KPI should support the level above it so that all levels of the organization are working together towards the same strategic goals.
Although monitoring KPIs can help management identify deficiencies within an organization, it is up to management to decide how to correct them. Having too many KPIs can be problematic. It not only dilutes employee attention, it also makes it difficult for managers to prioritize indicators and make sure the key indicators get the attention they deserve.
To that end, many successful companies limit KPI scope to small sets of indicators that evaluate the success of individuals in the organization. A common approach is to:

  1. Identify which three to five key performance indicators (KPIs) that should be tracked for each employee role or line of business (LOB).
  2. Implement automated tools to collect data and present KPIs to company management in a balanced scorecard, performance scorecard or executive dashboard.
  3. Evaluate how well the employee or LOB is making progress towards the organization's strategic business goals.
  4. Re-evaluate how well the KPIs are supporting current business goals.
  5. Make adjustments as needed.
