Tabula Rosa Systems Blogf Of 2/6/2016 - Our Best Universities Are Failing Internet Security!

From darkreading.com 9/10/2015

MIT, Cambridge, Other Universities Get D's In Internet Security

Colleges -- especially large, high-profile institutions -- are facing more cybercrime and nation-state activity.

Final exams aren't for a few months, but several big-name universities already have received low marks from a threat intelligence and risk awareness provider on their overall security posture on the Internet.
SecurityScorecard, which uses a network of Internet sensors and tools to benchmark the security posture of organizations, today published its first-ever Higher Education Security Report on some nearly 500 universities, and surprisingly, the tech-savvy Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) earned the lowest score, a 61%. Next-worst on the list in order were New Mexico State University, Cambridge University, Temple University, University of Virginia, University of Southern California, Boston University, University of California-Riverside, Louisiana State University, and University of Georgia.
In the number one slot of the top 10 Colleges with the best security posture -- an A grade with 97% or higher -- was a community college, Merced Community College in California, with a 98.7% score, followed by Concordia College, Adams State University, Centre College, Henry Ford Community College, University of North Alabama, Golden Gate University, University of Idaho, Gannon University, and Pepperdine University.
SecurityScorecard studied universities with 1,000 or more public IP addresses and graded their security posture based on the reputation of their IP addresses, Web application security on their public-facing apps, DNS health, and network security, including whether they generate bot traffic from infected machines in their networks. Data gathered from SecurityScorecard's sensor-based network is then analyzed by the company's analysis tools, and scored. The firm also studies so-called "hacker chatter" in underground forums about the organizations in question.
Big-name, high-profile schools had some of the lowest scores, the study found. "The strongest security seem to be lesser-known institutions," says Alex Heid, chief research officer at SecurityScorecard. "It could be an indication that they are not as heavily targeted. A lot of the information we pull …  is related to malware infections and exposures to botnets."
"We're able to see open ports that are allowing external Internet traffic," for example, he says. "We have large datasets from massive Internet scans to show what ports and institutions" are exposed, he says.

Tabula Rosa Systems Technical Term Of The Day - Gray Goo (or Grey Goo)

Gray goo (or grey goo)
Gray goo (or, in British spelling, "grey goo") is a term used to describe what life on our planet might become if self-replicating robots or nanomachines got out of control and began to use up life forms for their own energy needs in some unstoppable way.

The term was first used in K. Eric Drexler in his seminal book about nanotechnology, Engines of Creation. Michael Crichton's Prey is one of several science fiction novels about gray goo catastrophes. The possibility of all of us becoming a lifeless conglomeration of gray goo, whether by accident or by robotic intent, is considered exceedingly unlikely. However, it has been taken seriously enough by one researcher, Robert Freitas, to suggest some public policy recommendations.

In self-replication at the "nano" or molecular level, some source of energy would be needed and it would seem that these would be the same sources used by life forms or from life forms themselves (just as human beings derive energy from eating other animals that have obtained their energy from lower life forms). In the competition for energy with nanomachines, human beings might find themselves unable to adapt quickly enough through natural evolution, ultimately falling prey to their own intellectual creations.
A significant argument against the possibility of a gray goo situation is that engineers should be able to build in limiting conditions for self-replication. One writer, Chris Phoenix, says that it is as unlikely that a molecular manufacturing system could degenerate into unstoppable self-replication as that a drill press or lathe might self-replicate. Phoenix refers to nanorobots that self-replicate only for the limited purpose of a specific task, such as cleaning and closing a wound.

Variations on this term include:
  • Black goo or red gloo, the use of nanomachines by terrorists or nihilist to destroy all or some segment of humanity.
  • Pink gloo, a view of humanity itself, which can be seen as a self-replicating entity with a tendency to fill up existing space.
  • Green gloo, the idea of some antidote to the tendency of pink gloo to spread, perhaps limiting its ability to reproduce.

Tabula Rosa Systems - Blog Of 2/5/16 - In 2016 Global Internet Traffic will Pass One Zettabyte

World's internet traffic to surpass one zettabyte in 2016
The growth in traffic will put more strain on networks  James Titcomb

4 FEBRUARY 2016 • 7:01PM www.telegraph.co.uk

Global internet traffic will pass one zettabyte for the first time this year, after increasing fivefold in the last five years.

Cisco, the networking company that supplies much of the world’s internet infrastructure, says that the total amount of traffic will reach around 1,060 exabytes, or just over one zettabyte.

That’s a lot: one billion terabytes, or one trillion gigabytes or 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000000 bytes. Or 667 trillion films, or 152 million years of high-definition video (based on a two-hour, 1.5GB film).
Cisco is predicting that internet traffic will double again by 2019, with much of the growth driven by huge increases in mobile data use. Mobile data will grow at an average rate of 57 per cent a year, although most internet traffic will continue to be made up of fixed broadband.
Much of the increase in network traffic, which will place a burden on infrastructure and is likely to require heavy investment, will come from online video.
Data-thirsty video streaming will make up 41 per cent of all internet data this year, rising to 54 per cent in 2019. By then, Cisco says, less than half of all internet traffic will have come from PCs, as connected TV devices, smartphones and tablets account for more data.
The strain on the network is likely to be felt at busy hours - even more so than now. Traffic during the busiest hour of the day will increase 3.4 times between 2014 and 2019, compared to 2.8 times for average traffic.

Tabula Rosa Systems - A Very Special Blog - The Internet Of Fungus!

This is a very special blog. I saw this today and was so fascinated and swept away that I had to post and share it.

We are speaking of the "new" Internet of Things when, in fact, there have been such communications for billions of years among living organisms!
==============================================

The Internet Of Fungus

Hidden beneath the surface and entangled in the roots of Earth’s astonishing and diverse plant life, there exists a biological superhighway linking together the members of the plant kingdom in what researchers call the “wood wide web”. This organic network operates much like our internet, allowing plants to communicate, bestow nutrition, or even harm one another.

The network is comprised of thin threads of fungus known as mycelium that grow outwards underground up to a few meters from its partnering plant, meaning that all of the plant life within a region is likely tapped into the network and connected to one another. The partnership of the roots of plants and the fungi is known as mycorrhiza and is beneficial for both parties involved; plants provide carbohydrates to the fungi and in exchange, the fungi aids in gathering water and providing nutrients such as phosphorus and nitrogen to its partnering plant.

This fungal network has been found to allow plants to aid one another in growth and flourishing. University of British Columbia graduate Suzanne Simard was the first to show that trees such as the Douglas fir and Paper birch were capable of transferring carbon to smaller trees that may not be receiving enough sunlight, allowing seedlings to grow in the shade of other trees. Simard believes that many of the world’s seedlings would not be able to survive if it weren’t for the lifeline this network provides.

A study conducted by Ren Sen Zeng of the South China Agricultural University found that this interconnectivity also allows for plants to warn one another of potential harm. In the study, the team grew potted pairs of tomato plants where some of the pairs were allowed to form mycorrhizae. When the fungal networks had formed, one plant of each pair was sprayed with Alternaria solani, a fungus that causes early blight disease in plant life. Air-tight plastic bags were used to assure there was no above ground interaction. After 65 hours, the team tried to infect the second plant of each pair and found that those with mycelia bonds were far less likely to contract the blight and had much lower levels of damage if they did contract it than those with no mycelia.

A similar study was done by University of Aberdeen graduate David Johnson and a team of colleagues that showed Broad Beans also utilized the fungal network to eavesdrop on one another for impending danger. As hungry aphids fed on the leaves of one of the Broad Bean plants, the plants connect via mycelia began to excrete their anti-aphid chemical defenses, while those that were not connected had no reaction.

"Some form of signalling was going on between these plants about herbivory by aphids, and those signals were being transported through mycorrhizal mycelial networks."
-David Johnson

Like our internet, this fungal connectivity is also susceptible cyber crime, terrorism, and even warfare. Some plants, such as the Phantom Orchid, do not have the chlorophyll necessary for photosynthesis and must leech the necessary nutrients for survival from surrounding plants. Other plants, such as Golden Marigolds and American Black Walnut Trees have been found to release toxins into the network to hinder the growth of surrounding plants in the fight for water and light.

Some research suggests that animals such as insects and worms may be able to detect subtle exchanges of nutrients through the network, allowing them to more easily find savory roots to feed on; however, this has never been conclusively demonstrated in experimentation.

"These fungal networks make communication between plants, including those of different species, faster, and more effective. We don't think about it because we can usually only see what is above ground. But most of the plants you can see are connected below ground, not directly through their roots but via their mycelial connections."
-Kathryn Morris

The more we learn about this phenomenon, the more our understanding of the plant life of our planet will continue to change. Perhaps one day, we may be able to peacefully map out these complex fungal networks to appreciate them in their entirety.
