Study finds malware lurking in Amazon, Google and Groupon cloud services
Study finds popular cloud services compromised including those hosted by Amazon, Google and Groupon.

A recent study detected more than 600 cloud repositories hosting malware and other malicious activities on major cloud platforms including Amazon, Google, Groupon and thousands of other sites.

Researchers from the Georgia Institute of Technology, Indiana University Bloomington and the University of California Santa Barbara scanned more than 140,000 sites on 20 major cloud hosting services and found that as many as 10 percent of the repositories hosted by them had been compromised, according to the “Lurking Malice in the Cloud: Understanding and Detecting Cloud Repository as a Malicious Servicereport

The researchers also found hundreds of active repositories with malicious content containing several hundred “buckets” actively providing malware. Threat actors are using the cloud to deliver malware and other malicious things while remaining undetected and are using various methods ranging from traditional exploits to take advantage of poor configurations. Some of the exploits may even appear benign until they are arranged in a certain way, researchers said.

“When it comes to malicious buckets, our study found the new wave of repository-based cyberattacks,” Georgia Tech's School of Electrical and Computer Engineering professor Raheem Beyah told SC Media via emailed comments. “Cloud repositories have become the hub of malicious web activities.”

In one instance concerning potentially unwanted programs (PUP), the researchers found at least 11 bad cloud repositories from 3 different cloud platforms supporting 772 websites, Beyah said.

Beyah added that threat actors are taking advantage of the cloud because of how difficult it can be to scan the large amount of storage they provide. The report also found that cyber crooks are hiding their activities by keeping components of their malware in separate repositories that by themselves didn't trigger traditional scanners and the malware is only assembled when it's needed to launch an attack.

Researchers spotted a wide range of attacks in the cloud hosted repositories, ranging from phishing and common drive-by downloads to fake antivirus and computer update sites, the report said.

Sometimes the crooks would open an inexpensive account to host the software while others hide the malicious content in the cloud-based domains of well-known brands among good content to prevent the malware from blacklisting the domain.

Students Create Brilliant Extension That Identifies Fake News

In under 36 hours, the students achieved something Facebook really needed to do.

Kimberly Yam Associate Editor, The Huffington Post
The team behind FiB.
As the influence of fake news on the recent presidential election continues to be a hot topic, one group of students may have found a solution to getting duped by inaccurate sources.
A team of four graduate and undergrad students recently created “FiB,” a Google Chrome extension that verifies the authenticity of posts on Facebook to combat the circulation of fake news. What’s more, the group created the prototype in under 36 hours at a hackathon last month at Princeton University in New Jersey.

A post the extension’s tagged as “verified.”

The tool is currently unavailable for public use, but Anant Goel, a freshman at Purdue University who’s involved in the project, told The Huffington Post in an email that the team plans to officially release it during the first week of January.

“We wanted to create a proof of concept that the issue of fake news in social media can be tackled at a large scale,” Goel told NBC News of the project.

A piece tagged as “not verified.”
The FiB extension helps users separate the real from the fake through its two verification models, Goel explained to HuffPost. It first gives the source of the news, link or image a confidence score based on the source’s past credibility, he said. The extension also takes a step further by looking at the content, extracting keywords, and getting a summary of the article.

“We perform multiple searches on keywords and summaries. Depending on the results of these searches we give it another confidence score,” Goel explained, adding that depending on if the scores pass a certain threshold, they’re marked either “verified” or “unverified.”
Following the election, companies like Facebook and Google came under fire when the propagation of fake news, which was hosted on the platforms, was said to have had a hand in swinging the decision in Donald Trump’s favor. Some fake news stories, like one claiming that Denzel Washington had supported Trump, even went viral and began to trend on the social media site.

While both companies said they’d take steps to mitigate the spread of false news, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has insisted that his site did not have a role in influencing the election’s outcome. However, a Buzzfeed News analysis discovered that the top fake news stories from hoax websites and hyperpartisan blogs outperformed the top news stories from major news outlets on Facebook.

The extension, which is now an open source project so that other developers can help perfect it, has been released before. It drew in almost 50,000 user requests per second at one point, though it was designed to service 1,000 users. The team took it down to make the tool more efficient for a higher volume of users, according to NBC News.
The group’s admirable work hasn’t gone unnoticed and at the hackathon. They received the Best Moonshot award from Google ― a distinction that honors the most ambitious project, NBC News reported.
Bravo, team!

How Hackable Is In-Flight Wi-Fi? We're About to Find Out
by Alyssa Newcomb
nbcnews.com

With the holiday travel season in full swing, millions of people will be relying on public Wi-Fi, whether it's at a restaurant, the airport or - for a small fee - in the air. But just how safe is in-flight Wi-Fi?
We're about to find out.
Gogo, the in-flight internet company, is now inviting hackers to take a stab at hacking their internet. While that may sound counterintuitive, these hackers are the good kind, and are participating through Bugcrowd, a bug bounty company.
People use their smart devices on an American Airlines airplane, which is equipped with Gogo Inflight Internet service, en route from Miami to New York. Carlo Allegri / Reuters
The program will cover Gogo's ground-based public website and its airborne systems, which will only be accessible to participating hackers when they're flying on a Gogo-equipped aircraft.
If a hacker finds a bug, he or she can report it through Bugcrowd, where it will be evaluated and reported to Gogo. The rewards range from $100 to $1,500, depending on the find.
"It's changing this model of, 'We don't want any feedback. We don't want hackers looking at our stuff,' to, 'OK, actually we think this is a healthy thing, come talk to us,'" Jonathan Cran, vice president of operations at Bugcrowd, told NBC News.
"Public Wi-Fi is a minefield. You could navigate that minefield and get through unscathed - but you may get blown up too," Robert Siciliano, CEO of IDTheftSecurity.com told NBC News.
Skilled hackers can use wireless sniffing devices, Siciliano said, to see the data you've been putting on public Wi-Fi.
Siciliano recommends steering clear of entering your credit card or any sensitive credentials when using a public connection.
One way to step up your security is to download a VPN - that's a virtual private network. The software encrypts your data, allowing an extra later of protection.
As you gas up the car or take to the skies, Siciliano said the bottom line is to think before you click.
"Anything and everything you do on somebody else's Wi-Fi - email, credit cards used, credentials - all of that information could be seen by criminals."
